These designers show toys aren’t just for kids.

This year seems to be dominated by tie-in products. Sex and the City 2 has had everything from HP computers to dresses, while Twilight has had its own range of clothing debut at Nordstrom. But the most notable has to be Alice in Wonderland, which managed to have shoes, dresses, nail polishes, jewellery and much more themed around the 3D Tim Burton movie. The latest film to jump on the bandwagon is Toy Story 3, but it’s not just toys that are tied in to the animated movie as Revolve Clothing has a range of designer Toy Story-inspired tees.

Five amazing designers teamed up with Disney to create the tops, which are inspired by characters from the franchise. First up is Victor Glemaud who has created a bright red and blue vest with the silhouette of Woody because “Woody’s endearing and physically shy, I wanted to make him forcefully bold.” Having worked his way up from fashion publicity to design advisor for Paco Rabanne and eventually launching his own line, Glemaud knows what he wants, and that’s: “Color, color, color! Toy Story fits perfectly with my design trademarks.”

And if that’s not quite bright enough for you the next tee comes from label Cassette Playa which owner Carri Munden describes as “toxicolor uniform for hard boys and girls battling real and virtual worlds.” She takes inspiration from Japanese anime, African prints and nineties raves, resulting in a collection of neon colours and sci-fi graphics. She chose to design her shirt around Buzz and explains: “Buzz is my favourite character because he is a fearless futurist and adventurer! The ultimate cassette playa warrior, to infinity and beyond!”

On to another futuristic t-shirt from Costello Tagliapietra, a New York-based duo who are known for manipulating fabric and using couture techniques. On their sequined black shirt they say: “The characters are so nostalgic, having been kids in the 1980’s there is something so wonderful seeing your toy box come to life. We are always thinking about the nostalgic when we work, and how nostalgia filters through everything we see and do. We wanted to design something that felt universal, that was unisex and that felt iconic…. and we loved the new darker side to Hamm. Porkchop needed a tougher, butch look.” We’re not sure how butch he looks but the top certainly stands out.

Now for something more monochrome, but that doesn’t make it simple. British designer Jonathan Saunders is known for using traditional silk screen techniques to create unique and beautiful textiles and prints. And this has been recognised as he not only runs his own brand but collaborates with fashion houses including Chloe, Pucci and Alexander McQueen as well as high street stores Topshop and Target. On his interesting Rex tee he says: “Graphic imagery and placement print have always been an integral part of my work. I also love to combine different patterns and prints together like a collage. I have used all these techniques in the Toy Story piece. It’s been great to work with a concept that’s so fun; sometimes fashion can get a little too serious.”

The last women’s shirt in the collection comes from young British designer Henry Holland, who uses bold colours and patterns to create a fun, young line inspired by friend and model Agness Deyn. His use of bright colours and bold designs comes through perfectly in this Jessie-inspired top, and Henry says: “I loved all the different elements and colors to Jessie’s costume, and her kick- ass attitude very much reflects the girl who I design for. I loved the bold and bright colors in her costume and so used them quite literally on a tuxedo tee design. My trademark style is very bright, bold and humorous tee graphics so I think the idea of a tuxedo shirt reflects this perfectly. Luckily, Jessie’s costume is very bright and bold and so I was able to utilize the colors too. The finished piece is fun and enjoyable to wear, and that’s something that I always aim for with everything I do.”

Now you’ve read a bit about each piece and designer it’s up to you to choose which your favourite is, we’re totally torn between the House of Holland and Cassette Playa designs.
