Get Alice Cullen’s cute boho look from Twilight

Posted on March 22, 2010

Go grey with Alice’s delicate ensemble.

When asked to play the vampire sister to Robert Pattinson’s Edward in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s successful book series, Ashley Greene probably thought it was no big deal. But now, two DVD launches and three film shoots later, she should have realised just how big The Twilight Saga is. And her character Alice, the fun fashionista of the Cullen family, has become a style icon to millions of teenage girls. Much like her character, Ashley has a simple yet chic style that’s resulted in her acting as fashion reporter at the 2009 Video Music Awards.

But it’s not just the fashion actress Ashley was excited about, saying: “she can see the future — that’s pretty freakin’ cool. Everybody wants a superpower, right? I also love the fact that she’s such a good-hearted character. She could definitely be an evil, menacing, dark character, but she’s not. That’s a really great trait to have. I wish I was that optimistic in real life.” And although some fans complained that Ashley was too tall or her hair was too long, she does a great job of portraying the pixie-like Alice.

She’s gotten to wear some pretty high-end pieces so far, from her Michael Kors coat and red Gala gloves to her Diane Von Furstenberg dress, but the look we’re going for today is the first one we glimpse in Twilight. When the Cullen’s first enter the cafeteria of Forks high school everyone looks, and they’re probably looking at Alice who’s wearing a particularly cute grey ensemble.

“Alice is the kooky, artistic one in the book so there’s a lot that’s inspired by vintage,” says Wendy Chuck, costume designer for the first Twilight movie, “it was important to throw texture and layers on her, and for her to wear things in unusual ways.’’ And you can see it in this outfit, where she teams simple grey jeans with a white blouse and grey waistcoat for a smart/casual look, but cleverly layers it with a boho-style crochet Anthropologie Sparrow cardigan.

Her footwear was carefully chosen too, matching her delicate white and grey tones she goes for a pair of Sam Edelman Cruz Flat Pewter flats. And what Alice outfit would be complete without her trademark Cullen crest choker, which is also a soft grey colour. Chuck says: “When I first met Catherine [Hardwicke, the director], I presented the idea that the Cullens should have a crest that they would wear in different ways. It’s a very old-world thing to do.’’ The crest, while in-keeping with Alice’s vintage style, hints at her age (she’s well over 100) and gives the family more of a bond, especially since they don’t have any blood ties.

We’ve already seen Alice’s amazing New Moon outfits and now we can’t wait to see what she’ll be wearing in the third instalment, Eclipse. For now we’ve put together our picks from the net to create a great Alice-inspired look, from her pewter flats to her Cullen crest choker, make an impression with her glamorous grey outfit.
