High School Musical prom fashions land at Asda

Once upon a time there was the school disco. An innocent and clumsy chance for boys and girls to get together socially, perhaps share a slow dance and then be quickly chaperoned home again by their parents and all before the sun goes down. These days are now gone, the disco complete with naff DJ and cheap soft drinks replaced by the more adult “prom”. Proms are quite an American thing and are now proving increasingly popular on this side of the Atlantic, thanks in large part to Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) and the entire High School Musical crowd. And now eager to tap into this Disney-inspired craze is supermarket Asda which are set to launch a range of budget-friendly prom clothes.
A survey conducted by fashion brand George at Asda found that the average cost for attending a prom (ticket, travel and outfit) is £258, a price that many parents can’t afford in these cost-conscious times. To address this, tomorrow will see them introduce their evening range for teenagers on a budget with tuxedos for boys priced at £35 and a female prom outfit (pink or green tulip dress and black or purple high heel shoes) for £30.
“We are seeing a return of the more traditional prom style as school leavers embrace family values and look upon the High School Musical type dances as something to aspire to,” says George’s brand director Fiona Lambert. This new range from Asda follows last autumn’s replica of the black and white dress as seen on Gabriella in High School Musical 3: Senior Year and the new Hannah Montana: The Movie-inspired one (see here for more) on sale now.
