2012 sparks interest in Mayan calendar - but is it wrong?

Blog_2012_sparks_interest_in_mayan_calendar_but_is_it_wrong

It’s not often that the Mayan calendar muscles into conversation here at Boxwish (and by not often, we mean never). However, that might not be the case for much longer with new disaster epic, 2012 looming on the horizon (it hits cinemas this Friday). The action blockbuster starring John Cusack looks at the Mayan calendar’s prediction that the world will end on this date and as such director Emmerich (who loves trashing humanity with past efforts including Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) has really gone to town, laying siege to a number of international landmarks, with the Himalayas wiped out by a tsunami and L.A. saying sayonara thanks to a colossal earthquake (though an Islamic place of worship avoids onscreen destruction, see Related Content, right). But is this destruction actually true to the prediction? Some experts say a big fat no.

Today is a very special day Boxwishers. Not only is it Remembrance Day, but also an opportunity for some of us here at Boxwish HQ to go out into the wider world and get to meet some of our readers face-to-face. Yes, we’re wandering out of our movie haven to attend The Twilight Saga: New Moon UK fan party tonight at Battersea Park in London and we’re looking forward to meeting up with all our fellow Twifans. Like everyone else heading that way, we’re really excited by the event which dishes up a Q and A session with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the movie’s director, Chris Weitz along with music from some of the soundtrack’s stars such as Band of Skulls. But whether you’re also attending the showbiz pow-wow or not, we’ve got all the gossip to keep you in the loop.

For those with a hunger for haute couture, next year’s Sex and the City 2 promises to be a feast of fashion. Of course, we wouldn’t expect any less from Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her elegant allies, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and snaps from the movie’s New York set (production has now moved to Morocco) have delivered many of the usual labels – Christian Louboutin (bag and shoes, pictured), Yves St Laurent and Christian Dior to name but three. But one designer scoring some screen time in the hugely anticipated sequel is less familiar. Introducing British designer, Holly Fulton whose designs have been chosen to adorn the fashionable frame of Carrie Bradshaw herself.

Movies and TV, they go together like a horse and carriage (or something like that). Yup, the small and the silver screens haven’t always gotten on, but these days they’re practically inseparable. They share everything from talent to concepts, and the transference goes both ways, with TV shows being made into movies (Sex and the City, The X-Files) and movies into TV shows (The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Stargate SG-1). And with a number of 2009’s cinematic offerings going televisual (2012, The Time Traveler’s Wife) we’re wondering what others we’d like to see, with this week’s Team Boxwish question asking: What movie would you like to see made into a TV show?

When it comes to movie merchandise, we all have to bow down at worship at the feet of George Lucas. The bearded film producer/ writer/ director/ blah blah blah revolutionised the licensing of film tie-in goodies with his space saga, Star Wars and the film franchise continues to deliver incredibly innovative and fun treasures. And we just love this radio alarm clock modelled after a trooper figure from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is certain to add some sci-fi chic to your early morning routine. What better way to get yourself out of bed on those dark and cold winter mornings?
