Blog celebrates the quirky fashions of the Tenenbaums

Dressing as movie characters can often mean going glam. Men donning tuxedos to emulate the sophistication of James Bond or ladies stepping into the high heels and gorgeous gowns of evening wear elegance – but not this lot. The fantastically titled blog, Tenenbaum Fail, invites people to submit pictures of themselves dressed as some of the most bizarrely dressed folks from recent cinema – the eccentric Tenenbaum clan from Wes Anderson cult comedy, The Royal Tenenbaums. And with the latest Anderson slice of quirkiness, Fantastic Mr Fox currently at cinemas and that fancy dress bastion, Halloween but days away, we’re taking a few style tips from this most disfunctional of film families.
For women, there’s the character of Margot (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) in vertically-striped T-shirt dresses, fur coats and bobbed blonde hair held in a side-parting with a clip, or family matriarch Etheline (Anjelica Huston) in pink skirt suit and greying long hair in a bun. There are more choices for the fellas with Margot’s siblings, Chas (Ben Stiller) in his retro red Adidas tracksuit and curly mop of brown hair and Richie (Luke Wilson) in tennis gear seemingly more popular than the likes of Royal himself (Gene Hackman), Henry Sherman (Danny Glover) and Raleigh St. Clair (Anderson favourite Bill Murray), though there’s also some support for the face-painted, cowboy craziness of Eli Cash (Owen Wilson).
The blog is simply a photograph album of folks dressed as the characters, ranging from high-quality efforts to more modest attempts and from groups to plucky individuals. It’s great to see such love shown to the film and begs the question: what other movie-inspired costume blogs do we want to see?
A Twilight one would be fantastic as would Fight Club and the Star Wars saga, but our vote goes to The Lord of the Rings – let’s see those Hobbit feet!
