Fancy dress fever is dying down now after Halloween, but here at Boxwish we never tire of donning some camp clothing in the spirit of film fun. And though it’s another 50-odd weeks until All Hallow’s Eve, there’s still all number of Christmas and New Year’s parties looming on the horizon and we’ve spotted a show-stopping costume that is certain to impress come the festive season – Ludo from Labyrinth. Sure it looks kinda heavy and life inside it might get a little sticky and sweaty, but for those with a love of hairy hulks, the gentle giant makes a change from Chewbacca and the Where the Wild Things Are monsters. Read on for more.

The Ludo costume is the brainchild of ModMishief aka Chris (in the costume) and Allison, and on their blog they chart the progress of this outfit and other fantastical efforts. But we’re looking at the construction of the costume and this is neatly broken down into easy-to-follow steps on how-to website, Instructables.com.

First up, they list what materials are required for the different body parts: mask, body and feet, as well as the tools required to make the magic happen. First up is the mask, which begins with plaster and then clay is introduced before the shape is settled on and then painted and fur added. It’s then onto the gloves and fur bodysuit, with the feet coming last of all. And that’s it!

Certainly, it’s a very elaborate costume and so might not be suitable for absolute novices, despite the thorough explanations. The instructional finishes with the final order for action: “Take him out on the town!” Though it warns to “keep your eye on your guy in the fur. Not only will women be lining up to give him a hug, he might also be an easy target for drunken idiots.” That and nasty goblins. Wow, what a costume!
