In romantic drama, P.S. I Love You Holly (Hilary Swank) bemoans her lack of haute couture fashion ("I buy everything on eBay. It doesn’t count when you’re wearing Marc Jacobs from Minneapolis!” she laments), but we don’t quite believe her. A little snoop around her wardrobe reveals a fair share of tasty designer names, including Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen (see Related Content, right) and it’s an item from Philip Lim’s 3.1 collection that has caught our eye – the houndstooth box coat. A gorgeous piece that is just ideal for winter 2009.

Yes, the tear-jerker about a woman whose husband, Gerry (played by Gerard Butler) dies, leaving her messages that encourage her to move on and enjoy life without him (all signed “P.S I love you”), is now two years old and yet this coat is still remarkably on-trend with Alexander McQueen and style bible, Vogue celebrating and promoting it as one of the most dramatic looks of the season.

Brought to bear in the form of Lim’s coat, the bold monochrome really catches the eye, while the retro 60s vibe is heightened by the swing shape. Sadly, the coat is rarely available now and so we’ve tracked down some gorgeous lookalikes.

For those not deterred by designer price tags, swanky store Neiman Marcus is offering one by Joan Vass with flowing loose shape, while in the UK Marks and Spencer sells a mid-length version. For those on more of a budget, comes one from La Redoute which plays more experimentally with the houndstooth look and is more of a jacket than a coat, but for £53, makes fantastic value.

So hop on the houndstooth trend and inject some black and white brilliance into your winter coat look.
