Kristin Davis plays down fashions in Sex and the City 2

In Sex and the City, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) theorises that “Women come to New York for the two L’s: Labels and love,” and likewise that neatly sums up some of the charm of SATC, but what if one of them is a bit lacking? There’s been much speculation about the extent high fashion will play in next year’s much-hyped sequel to the 2008 hit, Sex and the City 2, with costume designer Patricia Field revealing that the clothes will be more fun to offset the gloom and doom of the economic recession (see Related Content, right), and Kristin Davis, who stars as park avenue princess Charlotte, has weighed in on the matter with news that might upset fashionistas.
In an interview with MTV News on publicity duty for her latest rom-com, Couples Retreat, the actress revealed: “There were more costume changes in the first one, than there are in the second one.” Admittedly, it’s a slight comment, but sometimes such off-the-cuff small statements can speak volumes. Does this mean the Manhattan ladies are being more frugal and less frivolous this time around, and if so, does this diminish the film’s glitzy glamour?
Or are we jumping to conclusions? SJP alone had 81 costume changes in the original with Charlotte, Samantha (Kim Cattrall), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) also racking up about 40 each as well, so many that a few less won’t make too much of a dent.
The debate rumbles on. Does the fashion make SATC or does SATC make the fashion? We’ll find out next May when the film opens. But if you can’t wait till then, why not check out some of the great products we’ve already spotted in SATC 2 here.
