Missed Shrek the musical on Broadway? Catch it on DVD

Folks certainly are getting optimistic about movie/ theatre crossovers of late. Last week, we told you about plans to revive the stage musical of Carrie, one of the most scorned and unsuccessful shows to grace the Great White Way (see Related Content, right) and now the suits at DreamWorks Animation have announced that their song-and-dance version of Shrek is getting a DVD release. A recording of a show based on a movie coming to home entertainment. It’s almost more confusing than The Producers!
Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks’ CEO bigged up the project to The Hollywood Reporter, enthusing: “We have something very special.” Adding: “The venture, as a whole, is something we’re very proud of.” And there is something to his argument, the stage spectacular about a grumpy green ogre based on the hit 2001 animation, earned some good reviews, picking up a prestigious Tony Award among other industry accolades and when it closes on 3rd January 2010, will have survived 441 performances.
And yet there are detractors. The run wasn’t as long as scheduled and at an estimated $24 million it cost more than it’s made so far ($10 million). However with domestic and international tours lined up, the head honcho (who has impressive pedigree in the screen-to-stage arena, having masterminded the successful transitions of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King during his tenure at rivals, Disney) expects Shrek the Musical to finish in the black.
So, what can we expect from this recording of the show? Katzenberg is tight-lipped on the subject, simply offering that the DVD release will have “unique packaging”. Well, it better be pretty special as we’re not wholly convinced that there’s really the biggest market for it. Anything less than a free talking donkey and there could be some disappointed faces.
