Steal Bella's look: Her hair secrets from The Twilight Saga: New Moon
Posted by Team Boxwish 14 days ago
When it comes to The Twilight Saga there are many fashion lessons to learn. From make-up to accessories, hair to clothes, those trendsetters from Forks certainly deliver in the style stakes and there’s such a range of personalities on offer. Want something quirky and boho? Take your tips from Alice (Ashley Greene). Looking for something more tomboyish? Follow in the footsteps of leading lady Bella (Kristen Stewart) and that’s something we intend to do, in this, the first in our series of blogs giving you the inside track on replicating the star’s styles. And we’re beginning with a trip to the hairstylist…
To create the perfect brunette Bella barnet, Twilight’s head hairstylist, Mary Ann Valdes and Beverly Hills salon owner, Stuart Gavert worked together using a special “twilights” highlighting method. Once set, these warm shades were augmented with a hair piece, as, being under 18-years-old during most of the shooting, Kristen’s onset hours were limited, leading them to introduce the piece, thus minimising the preparation time needed.
However, like so much of New Moon, a change was made in hairstyling personnel and Valdes and Gavert’s duties were taken up by key hairstylist Thom McIntyre and Kristen’s personal make-up artist and designer, Robin Mathews (who also worked with the star on the upcoming music biopic, The Runaways). And the two set about creating a look for Bella that expressed her journey through New Moon.
And her story gets complicated in this second instalment of the Stephenie Meyer saga, as McIntyre explains. “She goes through different stages in the movie – a breakup, her depression and then new motivation in her life.” While still reveling in her romance with Edward (Robert Pattinson), “her hair is sort of fairy-tale looking, curly and girlish,” says McIntyre. “Then she goes through degrees of it being unkempt after Edward leaves her. As she comes out of her depression, her hair becomes relaxed and carefree, more of a soft wave… it’s meant to look natural and undone – it’s carefree and indicative of her lifestyle,” he adds.
To achieve these looks, Kristen’s hair was washed with Kerastase Bain Miroir shampoo and conditioner for colour-treated hair. It was then onto Kerastase Nutri-Sculpt Mousse “because it worked with the natural waves in her hair and gave it movement.” When trying to play up the curl, a 1 to 1.5-inch curling iron was used on the ends and then the whole style was misted with hairspray. Voila! Instant Bella beauty.
