Steal Jacob's look: His hair secrets from The Twilight Saga: New Moon

There are so many possible divisions in The Twilight Saga. Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob? A fan of the Cullens or do you prefer the wolf pack? And on a more light-hearted note, do you prefer Jacob (Taylor Lautner) with long hair or short? It’s a debate that has split fans of the young Native American who befriends Bella (Kristen Stewart) and proves a love rival to Edward (Robert Pattinson). Some Twifans love him with his long glossy black locks, for others the shorter, spikier cut he introduces in The Twilight Saga: New Moon works better, but the decision to send Jacob to the barber’s was one of the few decisions not down to key hairstylist Thom McIntyre. The snip is noted in the Stephenie Meyer book, heightening the physical transformation of Jacob from young teen into a muscular young man and so it was case of making this happen onscreen.
Taylor has been very vocal in his dislike of the wig he dons as Jacob during the earlier scenes in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. “It was so weird to see that long hair on me,” he remembers. “It was very itchy, hot, and annoying. It not only was uncomfortable, but when I looked at myself in the mirror I wouldn’t be able to recognise myself.”
Adding to this hair nightmare was its interruptions during key scenes. “[The wig hair] would get caught in my mouth, and I would be spitting it out in this scene where I’m coming close to kissing Bella,” says the young star. “It was annoying.”
Thankfully for Taylor, the writing was always on the wall for the annoying hairpiece. “The last day of filming with the wig, we ripped it off, put it up in the air, and the whole crew gave a standing ovation,” he adds. “It was amazing to take that thing off.”
Taylor has kept the wig (as a hairy memento we presume) and is now enjoying life as the freshly shorn Jacob. Not that there weren’t still some concerns for Thom McIntyre. “Because black hair is difficult to show on camera, we had to make Taylor’s look really short and spiky,” he explains. Styling it began with wetting it and then finger-styling the strands with molding paste. Once this was applied, the hair dried naturally.
This look resembles that of Jacob’s fellow wolf pack members and is very much at odds with Edward’s lighter, more tousled and shaggy style, marking another difference between Bella’s suitors. However, one thing the unlikely pair share was constant attention from McIntyre. “To keep they style consistent, I trimmed his hair once a week,” he says, “but if it were up to Taylor, it would have been twice. He was very into his hair.” Maybe there are more similarities than we first thought…
