Even for those of us longer in the tooth than we’d care to admit, first-hand memories don’t stretch as far back as 1859 (and if they do, chances are you might be a vampire!) But here’s a little historical nugget to fill you in on one of the important events of November 24th 1859 – Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species was first published. Setting forth theories of natural selection and evolution, this seminal work is celebrated every year on the anniversary of its original printing (today) with Evolution Day. And here at Boxwish, we’re trying to get into the spirit, though admittedly we’re not quite sure what happens on Evolution Day (should we wear Darwin-esque fake bushy beards?) and so are just keeping things simple and asking an evolution-themed (well, sorta) question this week, namely: " Which is your favourite movie animal?"

Lucy: "I think my favourite recently is Dug the dog from Up. I didn’t get the whole talking dog thing at first, but by the end I thought he was hilarious, for some reason I was in stitches when he said, “I do not like the cone of shame.” I’m not quite sure why that line was so memorable. It’s a bit of a strange choice given that I don’t really like dogs in real life, I guess it was his personality that won me over – although I do think he would get annoying if he was an actual pet."

Tim: "I’m a bit of an animal fan, so I’ll have to break it into categories! For cuteness – Gizmo from Gremlins, for comedy value – the surfy turtle [Crush] from Finding Nemo, for screen presence – King Kong (obviously!), and lastly for coolness – it has to be Butkus from Rocky! (For bonus points I think his two turtles Cuff and Link are pretty cool!).

Steve: “Hmm this one’s pretty tricky; actually there are loads of cool animals in movies. If it’s animated animals then I’d have to say Donkey from Shrek or Nemo are pretty cool. For some reason the film Cats and Dogs (which isn’t really the best of films) pops into my head too, but I have no idea why.”

Nic: “My favourite movie animal is the llama [Kuzco] from The Emperor’s New Groove. I can’t say it’s because I relate to it or that it’s cute, I just want one. LLAMA!”

Katie: “I’m not one for movies where there’s an eccentric, scene-stealing pet that poos everywhere and destroys everything it touches but its owners love it anyway like Beethoven or Marley & Me and probably think movie animals are more fun when animated. It enables them to speak English and so enter into the plot and action a bit more and my faves are Donkey (the Shrek movies), Baloo the bear from The Jungle Book (when Mowgli thinks he’s dead I reach for the tissues every time), Dory from Finding Nemo (do fish count?) and the hyenas from The Lion King.”

Ella: “My favourite film animal has to be Jiji the black cat from Kiki’s Delivery Service, he’s so sarcastic but I absolutely adore him! I also love The Aristocats because Thomas O’Malley and his friends are just so cool and the kittens are really cute!”

And over to you Boxwishers. Do you have a favourite movie animal that you wish could be your pet or maybe something a little scarier that would be great at giving your neighbours the heebie-jeebies? Leave a comment and let us know.
