The Twilight Saga: New Moon's music supervisor spills soundtrack secrets
Posted by Team Boxwish 16 days ago
Here at Boxwish, the soundtrack to the ha-yugely anticipated The Twilight Saga: New Moon (countdown the remaining days until its 20th November release here) has been a long-running topic of conversation. Even before any acts were confirmed, we were busy discussing all potentials. From those that proved to be groundless rumours like The Jonas Brothers and Madonna, to some of the exciting prospects like The Kings of Leon to past favourites like Robert Pattinson and Paramore. But now after all the speculation, the finished soundtrack, which brags names like Thom Yorke, The Killers and Muse (repeating their Twilight success) is out there, selling like hot cakes and breaking records. And sharing how this impressive collection came to be is the movie’s music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas.
Patsavas is best known for her TV work, having given the likes of The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy and Gossip Girl their pop culture pizzazz and so was a natural fit for The Twilight Saga. Talking to SPIN.com, she revealed how she went about choosing artists to appear in New Moon.
“The work starts as soon as the script is finished and distributed,” she said. “Chris Weitz, the director, had a very specific point of view about how he wanted the music to feel [for more on Chris’s input see Related Content, right]. There’s a lot of separation and longing and loss in the movie; the bands and lyrics and sound and arrangements had to reflect that.”
“Some folks, like Lykke Li, the Killers, Grizzly Bear, OK Go, and Anya Marina all came into the cutting room and sat with Chris to watch the movie and talk about their contributions. Other tracks were submitted with the movie in mind. I think it’s very difficult to succeed without any context.”
On the relationship between the plot of the movie and the accompanying music, Patsavas elaborates: “I think the music has to be inspired by the characters’ lives, but it’s not always just used as source material – it’s used to score as well. Chris used the Bon Iver/ St. Vincent track [”Rosyln"] and Thom Yorke track [“Hearing Damage”] in spots that would have traditionally been scored."
Staying with the somewhat surprising inclusion of Radiohead frontman, Yorke, she continues: “A Radiohead song [”15 Step"] played over the end titles of Twilight [though wasn’t on the soundtrack – ggrr!], so we had a relationship. I believe this is the first soundtrack he’s been on in a long time, so that’s exciting. A lot of bands were interested in submitting great material, which helps a lot."
It sure does, these top names propelling the soundtrack to number one on the US Billboard 200 and number one in the UK compilations album chart.
