We try not to be too definitive when delving into our treasure trove of movie-inspired fan-made goodies. From birthday cakes to doll’s outfits, weddings to artwork, we’ve loved and admired each and every one that’s come our way as they are all testament to the inspirational quality of film; and so we’re usually loathe to compare efforts and announce one better, worse or stranger than the others. We say usually. But today we’ve stumbled upon one that we think is pretty much king of the castle, if that castle were to be wonky, inside out and made of wool. Yes, this is our contender for weirdest movie inspiration – a Star Wars fancy dress costume that needs (gulp) an amputee to help complete it. We told you it was strange…

A chap in Brooklyn has posted a small ad on website Craigslist stating that he is looking for “an amputee to complete my Halloween costume”, the costume in question being a Star Wars affair that brings together Chewbacca and C-3PO. The lumbering wookiee carries the droid on his back during The Empire Strikes Back, albeit only the top half of C-3PO as the rest has yet to be re-attached, and it is this sci-fi spectacle that the Brooklyn native is striving to replicate.

He writes: “I am big enough and strong enough to both pull off the Chewbacca look and to carry around a lot of weight for the evening.” And elaborating on his Halloween plans, says: “There are a few parties that I want to hit and I think we will be the hit of any event we attend.” He does concede that the idea “might seem strange and really offensive” (no, you don’t say), but still harbours high hopes, even advising that he and any his sidekick might “meet ahead of time so that we can work out the backpack/ harness system.”

Where to start with such a proposal? Sadly, it’s hugely insulting to the disabled community. The idea that a person would happily tag along as a macabre attraction, being carried around on someone else’s back is pretty distasteful and yet, yet… it’s good to see a little invention in home-made fancy dress costumes albeit undeniably misguided.

Know of any weirder movie-inspired costumes Boxwishers? We’d love to hear if you have.
