When Tony Stark revved about LA in his Audi R8 back in May (see article about Iron Man’s relationship with Audi here), we oohed and ahhed. But now the bat is back and Bruce Wayne is showing Stark how Gotham’s billionaire playboy spends HIS pennies – on the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640. It’s a change from the $400,000 Murciélago Roadster he used briefly in 2005’s Batman Begins, but being so rich, what’s a new car?

PLOT SPOILERS!

In Batman Begins, the car is only glimpsed fleetingly as Bruce Wayne enjoys a ride with some lady friends, but for The Dark Knight we really get to see what the Lamborghini can do. “We asked Lamborghini to give us some cars so we can race them,” explains the movie’s production designer, Nathan Crowley, “and use them in an action sequence, which we didn’t do on the last film.” Upon hearing that the Joker will destroy a Gotham hospital if Coleman Reese, a man claiming to know the true identity of Batman isn’t assassinated within the hour, Bruce Wayne races to save the man who threatens his security. “Will you be wanting the Batpod, sir?” asks Alfred (Michael Caine). “In the middle of the day Alfred, not very subtle,” replies Bruce as he exits. “The Lamborghini then – much more subtle.”

Bruce revs up the coupe’s 6.2 litre engine to help and on finding Reese, under the protection of Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), quickly intervenes. This speedy rescue mission does save the life of Reese, but sadly spells the end of the car. A wannabe assassin aims his car at Reese but, sensing danger, Bruce gets his car in the way first. The four-wheel drive, Luc Donckerwolke car is a write-off, but to protect his Batman identity, a “dazed” Bruce feigns innocence of the whole affair, pretending he was just “trying to catch the [green] light”.

They might believe you Bruce, but we don’t!
