Bond fans pick all-time favourite line-up
Excited about seeing Quantum of Solace? Silly question. Okay, I’ll re-phrase it: How excited are you about seeing Quantum of Solace? As excited as you were about Casino Royale two years ago or maybe you prefer vintage Bond to the modern MI5 agent? Now that he’s storming into cinemas everywhere this weekend, fans of the super-spy have been quizzed about their favourite ingredients in the 007 arsenal and it’s good news for Sean Connery, Ursula Andress and thigh-crushers.
Scottish smoothie Sir Sean who flaunted his double-0 status in five outings from 1962’s Dr. No to Diamonds are Forever nearly a decade later was voted the ultimate James Bond, winning nearly half of the votes. Current star Daniel Craig placed second with 25-per-cent of votes, despite only having been seen in Casino Royale at the time of voting. In this ideal line-up, Connery’s Bond would star opposite Ursula Andress (the white bikini wearing Honey Ryder from Dr. No) who was awarded the sexiest Bond girl title and would face-off against Richard Kiel’s metal-toothed henchman Jaws (The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker) who is the public’s pick for best baddie with a third of votes. GoldenEye’s Russian thigh-killer Xenia Onatopp (played by Famke Janssen) was named top femme fatale and Honor Blackman’s Pussy Galore from Goldfinger was crowned the best name.
Elsewhere love was shown to Paul McCartney’s 1972 soundtrack hit “Live and Let Die” as the best Bond theme and fans chose the plot of Casino Royale as their favourite. Daniel Craig also scored with the best fight – his free-running chase at the beginning of CR, but Roger Moore snatched the best stunt for the ski chase and parachute jump from The Spy Who Loved Me (not the opening bungee jump from GoldenEye?). Despite Moore’s arched eyebrow and saucy delivery, he failed to win the best line category with that honour going to Q for “I think he’s attempting re- entry” in reference to – oh you know. Don’t make me spell it out.
Interestingly the pick for Craig’s successor once he hangs up his Tom Ford suits and Omega watches is Clive Owen – the man who came so close to replacing Pierce Brosnan after Die Another Day rather than Craig himself. In fact, back in 2005 he was the public’s choice for 007 and it seems that despite being older than Craig, nothing has changed.
The polls were conducted by MSN Movies which totaled 23,000 votes and LOVEFiLM which earned 2,500. In response Graham Rye, editor of 007 Magazine said: “It’s no surprise that Sean Connery comes out as the nation’s favourite, together with Ursula Andress, the sexiest without a doubt!” We sure know who you voted for, eh Graham?
