Will Edward Cullen be minus his long hair in Twilight sequel?

Robert Pattinson fans will have no doubt heard the news – the heartthrob actor has visited a barber! Shock horror! Okay, so it’s not the most significant of celebrity shenanigans, I’m sure that stars get their split ends trimmed all the time, but it does pose some questions for the Twilight sequel, New Moon. The follow-up to the hugely successful Stephenie Meyer story is being rushed through pre-production with plans to start filming in March for a November release date and so everything needs to be in place to pick up just where Twilight left off. Including the signature hairstyle of Edward Cullen.

The carefully coiffured bronze barnet is integral to the character of Edward played by Pattinson. It’s fawned over by Bella (Kristen Stewart) in each of the four books and has helped establish not only the look of the moody vampire in the spin-off film but the subsequent hunk status of Pattinson. It reflects Edward’s genteel old-school nature and sensitive side, while referencing past classic romantic heroes. Can Edward still be the Edward we’ve come to know and love with a modern buzz-cut?

Surely it goes against the books, doesn’t gel with the first film (though there is something like three months time lag between the close of Twilight and the start of New Moon) and could risk the success and popularity of Twilight’s main man. Ashley Greene, who plays Edward’s sister Alice Cullen revealed to E! at the In Style/WB Golden Globes after party that the trim could have upset the New Moon producers: “I heard he got in trouble for cutting his hair. But what can I say? I like guys with longer hair.” Though she won’t be weighing in on the issue when the cast reunites for shooting: “I think he’s getting enough flack, I’m sure,” she said. “I mean his every move is recorded and photographed and documented, so I’m not going to give him a hard time.”

Hopefully the intervening months will give the hair a chance to reach its formerly foppish length, yet it asks the question – why did he get it done in the first place?

  • I love Edward's hair and can't believe Robert cut it. It better grow back, the idea of him wearing a wig or something is just awful.

  • Who gives a crap? Is Twilight so rubbish that it relies on the guy's hair for people to go see it?
