Casino Royale’s tag-line promised that we would “discover how James… became Bond” and indeed the 2006 blockbuster took us back to the roots of everyone’s favourite super spy. It’s a time when he has only just earned his double O status, still makes rookie mistakes and can wholeheartedly fall in love, but is still capable of kicking serious ass when he needs to. And amazingly, he manages all this without the help of the elaborately ridiculous gadgets from Q’s workshop that have both enlivened and undermined the successful franchise.
