James Bond is a spy loved by everyone. Women want him, guys want to be him and everyone wants to watch him on the big screen. Since 1962 and Dr. No, Bond has been fighting his way across the world in many different forms, from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan. In 2006 we added another new face, in the form of the rugged Daniel Craig, who was contracted to star in four films as the infamous James. Having done well in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace we were disappointed to learn last week that the Sam Mendes project ‘Bond 23’ has since been canned.
MGM’s money problems are seriously affecting the future of Mr. Bond, so for now we’ll have to take a look back at previous movies for our fix of spy style. And what could be more iconic than the tiny trunks Craig wore when emerging from the sea in Casino Royale. In fact it was so cool that Del Monte decided to turn the actor into an ice-lolly to mark the scene’s popularity. Craig was stunned by the attention, particularly since he admitted the sequence was actually an accident.
Craig remembers: “Where we filmed, off the Bahamas, it’s just one of those places where there is a sand shelf and the sand shelf happens to be three feet deep. Because the idea was, I was supposed to swim in and sort of float off, but I swim in and stand up. And it was just one of those things.” Talk about making the best of a bad situation, we wish all our accidents looked so good! After this the scene was used in various promotional campaigns, and caused millions of women to fall for the new 007.
We might not be able to attract millions of women when running out of the sea (it’s always too cold!) but we can sure channel the secret agent with some great lookalikes for his teeny trunks. While the sold out originals come from luxury underwear brand La Perla, we’ve checked the net and found some great replicas and lookalikes. Just remember that they don’t come with a license to kill.
