Everyone has a favourite Brad Pitt movie-inspired look. For some it’s the shiny slickness of Rusty Ryan in the Ocean’s movies, for others it’s the suburban sophistication of Mr and Mrs Smith and let’s not forget those killer Belstaff jackets in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. But for many of us (and there are many of us), the debate begins and ends with Tyler Durden.
The Fight Club anarchist has become Brad’s most famous and imitated role (you just try laying down any kind of rules and not saying, “The first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club,” – it’s impossible!) and so much of it’s down to Tyler’s cooler-than-cool hipster look. Sure, it’s got a great story, brilliant actors and a world class director (all things that don’t exactly hurt its reputation), but when it comes to screen style there’s no-one to compete with Tyler.
And so it’s remained since Fight Club hit (!) cinemas back in 1999. Empire magazine voted Tyler their number one style icon in the summer of 2008 – nearly eight-and-a-half years after release, and now we’ve hit the decade mark and there’s still no slowing down in his popularity. If anything, it just gets more and more frantic as we all try to tap into that Durden dream and clearly eavesdropping on our eager pleas is swanky sunglasses brand, Oliver Peoples.
Part of the Oakley family, Oliver Peoples eyewear is often worn by Brad both onscreen and off (he and partner, Angelina Jolie have even worked the same style – the Oliver Peoples Strummer, he in Ocean’s 13, her in Wanted) and they were behind the distinctive red/ pink sunnies seen on Tyler in Fight Club. And to mark the 10th anniversary of the flick (drum roll please), they’ve re-released the glasses, the OP 523 style to be precise, in a limited number.
This is incredible news for those of us who have searched high and low (or just hit eBay) for the quirky glasses since they were discontinued back in 2000 and is a nice pay-off to our years of sunny persistence. Yes, replicas have been pedalled in the intervening years, but now that we can get the real deal, these cheaper alternatives just don’t seem to cut it.
The glasses are available in two different colour schemes – silver with blood red lenses (like Tyler’s) or gold with orange lenses. And while we suspect the red ones will, naturally, get the vote of all FC fans, the gold ones have enough old school charm to find happy homes. Only 75 of both types are being manufactured, so it’s a case of first come, first served and with all the Tyler wannabes out there, it could be quite a crush.
So make sure you don’t miss out and get the OP 523 sunglasses while you still can. We hear they go well with fluffy lilac dressing gowns with bunny rabbits. Or cool leather jackets. You pick your favourite.
And if you still want more Brad-inspired eyewear, we’ve also got his sunnies from the likes of Mr and Mrs Smith (more OP), Ocean’s Twelve (Diesel) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Ray-Bans). So much choice, what would Tyler Durden do?
Is Tyler Durden really the best-dressed movie character ever?
