It’s incredible to think that this summer Back to the Future will be 25 years old. Yup, that makes the franchise older than Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) himself as we’ve enjoyed nearly a quarter of a century with the teen time-traveller and possibly the coolest movie inventor ever, Doctor Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd). It was the movie that made us dream of DeLoreans, wear orange body warmers and sing Huey Lewis and the News – ahh, those were the days.
Not that Marty and co. are just for 80s kids, oh no, every subsequent generation has grown up with those movies almost like film rites of passage like Star Wars or Indiana Jones. And so it doesn’t matter if you first saw it in 1985 or 2010 (though if it was only this year – where have you been?), it’s still just as cool and classic now as it was then, perhaps more so.
Don’t get us wrong, modern cinema is still pretty exciting (and if you don’t agree go see Avatar NOW!) they just don’t seem to make such fun family-esque movies anymore, flicks that you could happily watch with your baby brother or your wobbly old gran. And it’s this shortage of such screen gems that has us still looking nostalgically at past favourites. Think how popular the likes of Ghostbusters, E.T. and Dirty Dancing (shudder) still are today. Sure they’re kinda dated and have way too many perms on show, but the charm remains and it’s exactly the case with Back to the Future.
Think how much it’s a part of our lives. We’ve had presidents quote it in their public speeches, body kits have been sold to help people transform their DeLoreans into the time-travelling screen version and we’ve looked into hover board technology (y’know just in case). We’ve all squealed on the theme park ride, endlessly quoted it (“Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!”) and even gotten creative, attempting everything from rock’n’roll guitar playing to Clock Tower-inspired wedding cakes. And unsurprisingly, we’ve also welcomed it into our wardrobes.
Back to the Future clothing has thrived over the years, both with replicas of screen items (such as Marty Jr.‘s colour-changing cap and Griff’s metallic helmet) and more wearable everyday items working a BTTF vibe. We reckon we’ll stick with the latter, just to avoid that sticky problem of what to wear with a metallic helmet-thing (they don’t cover that kind of style conundrum in GQ magazine) and happy to oblige us have been all sorts of cool brands from Lacoste to Nike (though sadly not THE Nike sneakers from Back to the Future II – come on people, make it happen!)
And we’re working the look with this varied selection of spot-on BTTF-inspired T-shirts. Choose from tees that happily gush over their BTTF allegiance or ones with more cryptic references for the more involved movie fan; those that stay loyal to the movie’s message or riff creatively on its iconic imagery or some with fashion credentials or just those with pure geeky love for Marty and Doc. Whatever you want from your BTTF tee, we’ve got it.
They’re your density, sorry, destiny!
