It’s a popular grumble among movie fans at present – where have all the action heroes gone? Arnie’s off playing politics, The Rock has gone all kiddie friendly and Harrison Ford is getting a bit creaky, but one action stalwart is still flying the flag for old school adventure – Bruce Willis. Having hit the half century mark a few years ago, we might have forgiven John McClane for hanging up his (always filthy) vest and yet he keeps on going, showing those young whippersnappers that you don’t need to have a flowing head of hair to scare the crap out of crims. And this week he’s back doing what he does best, kicking ass and taking names in new cop comedy, Cop Out.
The latest film from Kevin Smith, Cop Out is your typical clash of cultures cop partnership in that Lethal Weapon/ Rush Hour tradition. Bruce is white, tough and cool, his colleague Paul Hodges (played by 30 Rock comedy god, Tracy Morgan) is black, daft and a bit off the boil – hijinks ensue. It’s clearly a fun and easy role for Bruce, who’s probably more familiar with reading crooks their rites than real-life cops. Just check out his cinematic CV, it’s a who’s who of screen law enforcers.
He’s been a cop in black and white (Sin City), a cop from a family of cops (Striking Distance), a cop with a drinking problem (16 Blocks), a cop retired with a new career (Hostage) and a cop with a thing for vests as the iconic John McClane in the Die Hard movies (you might have heard of them). He’s also blurred the lines as security guards (Unbreakable), FBI Agents (Mercury Rising, Surrogates), private investigators (The Last Boy Scout) and military men (The Siege, Hart’s War, Tears of the Sun) giving him a weathered and worn air of authority that demands our respect.
And so with the bruising baldie working his police officer schtick once again, we’re enjoying some Bruce-inspired goodies. From Cop Out, we’ve spotted that classic combo of the film hero – wristwatch and sunglasses. As veteran New York police officer, Jimmy Monroe he keeps on top of the crims with his cool Tag Heuer Link Calibre S wristwatch worn in Bruce’s trademark ‘face down’ way on the right wrist and his Mosley tribes Aviatrix sunglasses.
However if you’re more a fan of Bruce’s past police outing as the indefatigable John McClane we’ve got some spot-on Die Hard suggestions. Work the look yourself with a white vest (add your own dirt) and an I.D. badge or simply pay homage with a cool printed tee. Yippee-ki-yay, mother***er!
Bruce has talked up a possible Die Hard 5, but do you want it?
