For one moment let’s try and forget the teenage hysteria that follows him everywhere. The crazy media crush that sees him hounded around the clock and his every movement reported on like its headline grabbing news. And please, please shall we ditch that god-awful nickname RPattz? His name’s Robert, perhaps not the starriest name out there (though it didn’t do Messrs Downey Jr., Redford and De Niro any harm) and while there’s no avoiding the Twilight circus or denying that he’s the biggest Hollywood heartthrob of the moment (believe us – we’ve tried!), he HAS got some things going for him. Stuff for guys – not just girls feeling the first horny kick of puberty.
And chief among these is his sense of style. GQ named him their Best Dressed Man for 2010 beating the likes of fashion guru Tom Ford, soccer star David Beckham and Mr Bond himself, Daniel Craig, with design duo, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana describing him as, “extremely elegant and inspiring, the true essence of a contemporary man.” Serious praise indeed. He’s also been ranked on other such lists including People magazine and is always named as one of the red carpet highlights by fashion critics.
Sure, this is him off-screen kicking about away from the rolling cameras, but this stylishness doesn’t leave him when the director yells “action!” If anything, he sometimes looks even cooler up on the big screen and as Edward, the brooding romantic hero at the (non-beating) heart of The Twilight Saga, he really brings it.
Edward’s supposed to be the ultimate female fantasy – handsome, sensitive and doesn’t leave the toilet seat up (probably) – and as such he’s constantly dressed to impress (there’s no stained sweat pants and grubby tees going on here). And while girls might be swooning over the vampire under the clothes, we’re more about the actual clothes themselves and we particularly like his grey G-Star jacket.
G-Star is a big player in the Twilight world, with both Edward and his brother, Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) working the look a lot. The Dutch brand has carved out a cool reputation for on-trend urban clothing with strong military influences and this relaxed style really suits the undead duo, giving them a contemporary but classic edge. Edward also wears his in a slate grey that is very much part of his look, along with dark blues, white and black, (his grey pea coat proving particularly popular), perhaps reminding us that he’s a bloodless vamp or maybe he just likes the colour. Whichever.
But forget Twilight, Edward and why the costume designer went for grey. All we know is it looks good, the thin G-Star denim jacket spot-on for spring wear. Not too heavy for when the sun decides to shine and warm and thick enough to do a decent job. It’s almost a combination of looks – denim, mixed with a bit of bomber (the ribbed fabric cuffs and hem) and then a bit of military (the pockets and stitching) marking it out as different.
And the grey? A big upcoming trend for spring/ summer with the likes of Prada going crazy for it in their collections. Expect to see plenty more of it in the coming months, but get ahead of the crowd with these jackets all working the look now.
Is Rob better dressed onscreen or as himself?
