Every artist has a muse, and likewise most auteurs have a star or two they love to cast in their movies. Spielberg had Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks, Scorsese had Robert DeNiro and currently Leonardo DiCaprio and Woody Allen has had, well, many including Dianne Wiest, Diane Keaton, Mia Farrow and Scarlett Johansson. And it seems action director Paul Greengrass has claimed Matt Damon as his own.
For almost three years (since The Bourne Ultimatum) fans of the pairing have been waiting for their next project. And the wait is finally over as the Bourne couple are back with new war movie Green Zone. This marks an exciting return for the actor-director pair as they recently disappointed fans everywhere by announcing that they would not be making another Bourne movie together. Director Greengrass does not want to do another one full stop, and Damon refuses to make another without him.
Green Zone follows Roy Miller (Damon), a US solider in Baghdad looking for Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction along with his team. As the search becomes more dangerous and the team come under fire, Miller begins to question what he’s doing. Along with The Wall Street Journal reporter Lawrie Dayne (The Wire’s Amy Ryan) and CIA agent (Brendan Gleeson) Miller begins to question the intelligence information the team receives, causing him to go rogue.
Packed with action and adventure, the film also brings up some of the questions we were asking during the Iraq war. Green Zone marks another huge success for Damon and Greengrass, proving that they are the ultimate pairing when it comes to action, excitement and guns. The film was inspired by real events chronicled in journalist Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s 2006 book Imperial Life in the Emerald City.
Damon was impressed by the writing, saying: "Paul takes the screenplay and stretches each scene without worrying about technicalities. Sometimes, actors can overthink things during a shoot, but not with Paul because, when nobody really knows what’s going to happen, he just creates this beautiful chaos that when captured the right way, feels so real.”
Damon wanted to create a realistic experience for himself and the audience, even down to the costumes: "I wanted to wear real military gear because all those details help your performance come alive, especially if you are surrounded by soldiers and you want to start feeling like one too.” He picked up a lot of the language and official terms from the cast, many of whom were current or ex military. And he got on with them pretty well, as you can see from the Basic Training Featurette below.
You’ve got the Oakley sunglasses and grabbed the military gear, so now it’s time to experience it firsthand. We’ve found a selection of experiences that’ll teach you all you need to know to star in Paul Greengrasses next flick. There’s survival techniques, paintball fights, tank driving and of course some spy games, all designed to teach you a lesson or two when it comes to action.
