You’re a bestselling author, women throw themselves at you and you’ve got a daughter who’s a lot more mature than you. But if you’re anything like Richard Castle (played by Firefly’s Nathan Fillion) you’re bored. Suffering from writers block and almost getting bored of signing young women’s chests (we said almost), it comes as an exciting change when he’s brought in for questioning about a murder by the NYPD. But why would a rich and famous author be a suspect in a murder? Because the victim was posed exactly as described in one of his novels.
After Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) decides that Castle is simply the muse for the murderer, she thinks that’s the end of their relationship. Despite being a fan of his books, Beckett couldn’t be more pleased to see the back of Castle. Which makes it all the better when her boss tells her he’ll be consulting with them on cases, and researching her for his brand new book.
Castle draws on the hugely successful police procedural genre’s need for a double act, a detective with a sidekick. Sometimes it’s a rookie cop, a journalist or a scientist, but they’re always there to look up to and learn from their mentor. And in recent shows the emphasis has been on the male-female teams; Booth and Brennan in Bones, Cal and Foster in Lie to Me, Sara and Grissom in CSI. So, why the shift? You guessed it; it’s all about sexual tension.
It’s no surprise that Castle’s attracted to the serious but sexy detective, but when actor Nathan Fillion was asked the will-they-wont-they question he said: “I teasingly say we’re gonna risk it and put them together right away and see what happens. But the reality is when two people actually meet and are attracted but are perhaps not a perfect match, they’ve got to get to know each other. They’ve got to spend time with one another. You’ve got to spend time with someone.” Since the ABC show is currently in its second season, they’ve got plenty of time to spend together.
Joined by his intelligent (and extremely grown-up) daughter and his fun loving mother, Castle finds himself drawn to Kate Beckett like a moth to a flame. Being an accomplished author seems to have had an effect on Castle’s style. He opts for simple shirt-and-jacket combos, more like teacher chic than world-wide celebrity, but he manages to pull it off. So we figure if he can do it, why not us? We’ve had geek chic and granddad chic, so why not classroom chic?
We’re not quite at the level where were comfortable with corduroy elbow patches yet, but Castle’s light brown suede jacket is just about at the right level. Suede is pretty expensive and needs a bit of looking after, it says dignified and distinguished, not grumpy and boring. So if you want to attract your own Detective Beckett (without getting arrested), grab one of our great lookalikes for Castles suede jacket.
Who's the better pair; Castle and Beckett or Booth and Brennan?
