Not many shows get their seasons to hit double figures. It’s becoming an increasingly tough ask as networks get cancellation happy, scrapping shows before they’ve even finished their opening titles, so getting past the first few seasons into a well-established groove is seriously special. All the more so when your show features a talking turd. Yup, we’re talking about comedy cartoon, South Park which returned for its 14th, yes 14th season on Comedy Central last night in the States and will hit UK screens tomorrow.
And it definitely promises to be a big season for the long-running sitcom from comedy gods, Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The opening episode, “Sexual Healing” will see a new face among the residents of the snowy small-town as lucky competition winner, Matthew Klinner will be given the South Park treatment and immortalised as an animated version of himself in the opening credits, while we’ll also be hitting the exciting landmark of 200 episodes. It’s a good time to be a South Park fan and with a further season signed up as well, it shows no signs of slowing down.
Not that things have always been this smooth sailing for our gang of grade-schoolers. Since we first met Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny back in 1997 there have been all number of controversies and criticisms. With its fearless near-the-knuckle attitude, raucous toilet humour and lust for violence, South Park has happily taken on everything from child abuse to abortion, gay marriage to the Iraq War offending parents councils, Christian groups and Scientologists. Hell if you haven’t been offended by South Park, then you either haven’t been watching closely enough or you’re an open-minded adult – congrats. Even one of their cast members, soul singer, Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, quit the show when they turned on his religion of choice, Scientology.
But for every old woman getting their knickers in a knot over a little comedy carnage, are many more fans like us who can’t get enough of the sleepy snowy town. It’s scooped four Emmy awards, spawned a hit movie, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut as well as three cracking CDs. Yet it’s the show’s mountains of merchandise that really show how hungry we are for all things South Park, becoming an industry that generates several million dollars a year alone.
And we’ve had everything over the years. Sega Pinball was quick to notice the show’s early success and gave us a South Park pinball machine in 1999, while a year earlier America’s best-selling T-Shirts worked the SP look. This first season saw $30 million brought in on T-Shirt sales alone and since then we’ve had Christmas decorations, plush and talking dolls, books, video games, the list goes on and on. Everything you could possibly want from SP and more.
So as we gear up for this 14th season hanging with Cartman and co., we’re bringing you some of the coolest and quirkiest SP merchandise out there. Enjoy!
