Gerard Butlers climb to fame may seem slow on paper; he’s progressed from stage to small screen to silver screen, but it’s only in the last few years he’s become a really recognisable name. It was the role of King Leonidas in graphic novel adaptation 300 that really thrust him into the limelight, and since then we haven’t been able to avoid the Scottish star.
From action to romance and thriller to gangster, Butler has worked in pretty much every genre, showing he’s got the skills to pull them all off. Producer Neal H. Moritz agrees, saying: “Gerry’s been in a lot of different kinds of movies, but his talent for comedy is just beginning to be explored. I think this movie was tailor-made for him.”
His latest role is that of Milo Boyd, a ex-cop who’s turned to bounty hunting to pay the bills, not that there’s many when you’re living on your friends couch. Life isn’t so great for him, until his reporter ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston) skips a court hearing to chase a story. This makes her a felon and Milo is looking forward to handing her over and collecting the bounty. And he’s right about catching her, but it’s keeping her that’s going to be hard work.
Nicole (Aniston) works for the Daily News and is always after the latest story, which is what’s gotten her added to Milo’s list. But as he chases Nicole and she chases the bad guys, the goal gets a bit confused. “That’s what’s fun about watching this story – as Milo is chasing Nicole he gets involved in pursuing the story she’s trying to break,” Aniston says, “so they get back into the beauty of what the fun of what their relationship was.”
And while it might seem this movie’s turning into a mushy rom-com for girls, don’t be fooled, there’s enough action to keep us guys happy. Moritz says: “It’s an action comedy that has romance in it as well. Andy does all of those things – comedy, romance, and action – really well.” Sounds like the perfect movie to keep both parties happy.
The action isn’t spread thinly around the romance; there’s car chases (Milo has a sweet ’75 Oldsmobile), bar fights, guns, tasers and Milo even takes a few hits from golf balls. When a scene called for Milo to jump from a particularly high building the stunt double was called in, but after watching him a few times Butler decided to do it himself. Good man.
Since he does a lot of driving in his sky blue convertible, Milo need a cool pair of sunnies worthy of an action man. And he opts for a pair of Oliver Peoples glasses, the silver framed Farrell model to be more precise. They’re a simple shape but not as clichéd as aviators or wayfarers, making them perfect for a mean bounty hunter out to get revenge. And if you can’t afford the originals (they come in at around $300/£200) we’ve found some pretty good lookalikes for Butlers. Now you’ll just need to hunt down a meaty convertible to track down your target.
Should Gerard Butler ditch the rom-coms and stick to action movies?
