Since it began back in 2004, there have been so many cool characters in Lost. Some have fallen victim to the mysterious Island, coming croppers far too soon (I especially miss Mr Eko and Charlie), while a lucky few have made it through six dangerous seasons; dodging the smoke monster, surviving the Others and living off Locke’s barbequed boars. And one character that has really stood out as a particular fan fave since his introduction back in season two is Desmond Hume.
Played by TV and theatre actor, Henry Ian Cusick, Desmond has managed to become one of the show’s most beloved characters despite not being one of the original cast or being a survivor of Oceanic 815. He was already on the island when the plane heading from Sydney to L.A. crashed, (it even being his fault that it did so, failing for the first time to input the numbers into the computer system), having been shipwrecked there whilst competing in a boat race, and since becoming part of the ‘island gang’ has struggled with all sorts of tough situations, most memorably predicting the inevitable death of Charlie (Dominic Monaghan).
He’s also been our route into understanding the time travel storyline, making him a key figure in the plot of the show, yet it’s his intense and unwavering love for former girlfriend, Penny (Sonya Walger) that has really defined Desmond. Flashbacks have revealed how their love first blossomed and then struggled (he thought she deserved better, her dad, the enigmatic Charles Widmore didn’t approve) and how during all his hardships, it’s been his mission to be reunited with her that has given him the strength to go on. It saved his life in season four, when, under the threat of death by repeated time travel, he had to connect with something or someone that had been a ‘constant’ in his life over the years, their phone chat effectively keeping him alive.
There are plenty of love affairs in Lost, from Sun and Jin to Juliet and Sawyer, Rose and Bernard to Kate and Jack, but there’s nothing like the Desmond/ Penny relationship. Season four’s phone call and season five’s eventual reunion were real stand-out moments in a show of them and deservedly earned some serious praise from TV critics. He’s been one of the few Lost stars to get nommed at the Emmy Awards back in 2006, and despite taking a backseat in this, the sixth and final season, remains a fan favourite.
And so if you’re firmly in Camp Desmond, we’ve found some cool tees showing some love to the best Constant on the island.
Is Desmond the most criminally under-used Lost character?
