Everyone has their favourite character in Lost, that one face in the crowd that they can’t watch to catch-up with every week. And for many of us it’s Hurley (Jorge García). Jack might have the smarts of being a top surgeon, Sayid can snap a guy’s neck with his feet and we hear the ladies like Sawyer, but if we were stranded on a desert island the guy we’d want to hang with is most definitely Hurley. And not just cos we’d look ripped in comparison.
The guy’s a legend, the average schmo that we can all relate to. He doesn’t want to be the leader of the pack or change the world, he just wants to get by and have a little fun if possible. That might mean playing a bit of golf, going for a joyride in a beaten up old van or chowing down on an Apollo chocolate bar – it doesn’t matter and it’s this genuine, fun and down-to-earth niceness that has made him one of the most well-liked of the island inhabitants. Hell, even Sawyer likes him despite the endless list of nicknames (Stay Puft, Pillsbury, Rerun, etc. etc.)
That’s not to say that he’s bland. Hurley’s been in a mental institution, talks to the dead, is obsessed with ‘the numbers’ and thanks to them has won the Lottery leaving him a multimillionaire (for good or bad? Erm, how’s about both?) but despite this, he’s nowhere near as dark and tortured as many of his fellow Oceanic 815 survivors.
He has some daddy issues (yet nothing to rival Locke or Jack), has been unlucky in love falling for Libby only for her to die (sad, however not in the leagues of epic heartbreak like Sayid) and has been faced with some tough situations (again pipped by Desmond trying to constantly save Charlie from dying), yet he remains the light, comic relief that often breaks up the tensions with a simple “dude”.
It’s this ‘normal guy’ charm that has seen him stick in there when so many other characters have said sayonara. Who else could see a shift back in time to 1977 as an opportunity to re-write The Empire Strikes Back or bet Sawyer into dropping his constant nickname taunts? Hurley is our everyman hero, and while he doesn’t exactly look like your average screen superman (spandex can only suck in so much), he is the one we always cheer for.
