When it comes to cinematic trendsetters they don’t come any more iconic than Tyler Durden, the terrorist hipster played by Brad Pitt in 1999’s cult fave, Fight Club. Angelina Jolie’s fella has carved out a pretty cool career as one of Hollywood’s best-dressed leading lights, impressing in everything from the Ocean’s movies to Mr and Mrs Smith, but nothing, repeat nothing, compares to the fashion frenzy he caused in Fight Club.
After all, Tyler Durden shouldn’t look good. Actually stop and think about what he’s wearing – whether it be the garish tanks, the oversized red shades (recently re-released, gets yours here) or the cheesy 70s print shirts – on most people they’d look crap, uncoordinated relics from a past best forgotten. But on him, they somehow, inexplicably look cool. Okay it helps that Brad Pitt’s never even heard of the ugly stick, yet it’s more than that. And nothing better sums up Tyler’s unique and quirky brand of cool more than his red leather jacket.
It’s not the only leather jacket donned by Tyler, who also sports a classic biker with arm bands now commonly known as the ‘Mayhem ’ jacket (referencing Tyler’s terrorist organisation, Project Mayhem), however it’s become the most familiar and inevitably, the most wanted. Sadly for folks searching high and low to source the original jacket, it, like everything else costume designer, Michael Kaplan kitted Brad out in for the film, was a vintage piece rather than one of many pulled off a department store’s rail.
So hold off on the elusive original, instead check out the wealth of spot-on replicas we’ve found which are available to buy online. They’ve each been closely styled on the onscreen version, copying its every detail from the intricate stitching to the vibrant shade of red, and are the best workable solutions out there. Some are individually made-to-measure, others offer just a standard size these variations reflected in the price offered, so whatever your budget you’ve got choices.
These lookalikes pack just as much kitsch retro punch as the original and are great whether worn with your more modern, everyday wardrobe or with Tyler’s outlandish shirts, stretchy tees and unmissable sunnies to achieve his full-on hipster effect. Who knew the junk shop look could be so cool?
