If Kick Ass has taught us anything it’s that anyone can become a superhero. Yeah you might get made fun of, or hurt or even killed but you’ll look pretty cool doing it. Which made us think, why don’t we make our own superhero costumes? I can’t be that hard, plenty of our comic favourites have managed to get to grips with a needle and thread in order to look super special while fighting crime. And if it goes wrong you’ll only look as good as Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) in his first Spider-Man costume (remember it from the wrestling match?)
And if you haven’t got the powers to pull off a pretty lame costume, the next option seems to be to get someone to make a great one for you. Superman had Ma Kent unravel his baby blankets and re-knit them into his red and blue threads, in The Dark Knight Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) make him a new Batsuit, and Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer) is seen putting together her own Catwoman suit in Batman Returns.
But if you’re looking to get your super-suit ready pretty quick you have two options. Firstly you could copy Kick Ass (Aaron Johnson) and order a wetsuit from the internet, or you could go down the Peter Parker route and create your own (we prefer this idea, much more personal). So what will you need? Well we’ve found some man-leggings (sounds awful but every superhero needs some lycra) and comical blue y-fronts to wear over the top. Next add your long sleeve black top, and create a logo, or just the first letter(s) of your superhero name, using blue tape – easy to change if you’re first attempt fails. We’ve heard you can create your unique name by putting together your second favourite colour and favourite drink, The Blue Corona sounds pretty cool to us!
Next you’ll need to hide your face, so a mask or balaclava is a must. Add optional gloves and boots (we think colour coded high top trainers would look good) and you’re almost there. But the last piece is again optional – a cape. If you remember what Edna Mode (voiced by Brad Bird) said about how dangerous they can be in The Incredibles, you might not want to add one. But if you do, grab a bedsheet, tie it round your neck and you’re good to go. Now just to find some crime to fight!
