While so many styles are only seasonal (chunky knitwear in summer? No thanks) there are others that stay just as fresh and fashion-forward whether its spring, summer, autumn or winter and one such trend is frills and ruffles. These are unashamedly from the feminine school of dressing, adding a little girlie innocence to any ensemble. They’re also perfect for glamming up a workplace outfit or for adding that extra dash of drama to your going out gear and with trendsetters like Diane Kruger and Lady Gaga working the romantic ruffles, you know it’s got showbiz chic.
We’ve spotted and fallen for these frills as seen on Becky Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) in fashionista favourite, Confessions of a Shopaholic. Hers are unsurprisingly expensive (she does have an addiction to shopping), coming from French fashion house, Lanvin and are artfully draped around her in a V-neck purple mini-dress which she plays up with statement jewellery and a patent black belt.
Patricia Field, the style guru behind Sex and the City dressed Isla for the movie and this outfit is typical of Field’s outrageous and eye-catching style. She reveals that she sought to dress Isla in clothes that were "eclectic, young, colourful, sexy and outspoken” for the role and we definitely reckon she’s hit the nail on the head with this outfit.
The bright purple shade boldly bounces off Isla’s naturally red hair (“I used a lot of purples and pinks and warm colours on Isla because her red hair just sets those colours off," explains the New York designer. “A redhead looks great in purple,”) and the frills showcase both Becky’s fierce and fearless attitude and taste for the theatrical (she also wears pom-pom boots and a cape).
Sadly, the Lanvin original is as difficult to track down as Becky’s budgetary sense, but we’ve found some top examples that capture all the fun of frills.
Do you think frills only work well with girlie outfits?
