If there’s one big trend popping up everywhere this spring it’s florals. Flowers are an evergreen style staple, always adding a bloom of romance and whimsy to any outfit, and with this year’s fashions head over heels for romance (think ruffles, pastels and delicate draping), florals are again bursting through to banish the winter wardrobe hangover.
The seeds for this high street trend were sown on the catwalks of a number of fashion labels from Oscar de la Renta to Nicole Farhi, Gucci to Moschino and in all manner of workable ways. Wear them bold and big or more discreet and ditzy; colourful and creative or muted and mature. Florals can easily dominate an outfit by stealing the show as with a tea dress or trench coat or can be more frivolous and optional like a shoe print or hair accessory.
The look is kept current and innovative with textured 3D florals (how very Avatar) as seen in the collections of Dolce and Gabbana and Giambattista Valli who both introduced corsage style flowers that beautifully combine the trendsetting with the traditional. While for those looking for a more vintage vibe wear the flowers in a 50-esque prom dress, 70s-style maxi dress or shoulder-padded trouser suit as in the 80s.
Alternatively, bring flowers into the present just like Savannah, the college student played by Mamma Mia!’s Amanda Seyfried in weepie romance, Dear John. Savannah adopts the floral look through her over-the-shoulder fabric bag, which has a soft pink print of flowers and butterflies against a white background.
Unlike so many eye-catching handbags from movies and TV, it doesn’t boast a designer label and a scary price tag; instead this is more homespun than Hermès. As such it suits Savannah’s student status and girl-next-door style (denim cut-offs, vest tops, pastel cropped shorts) and even has some cute customisations like plastic buttons and an embroidered S initial. These simple flourishes keep it young and fun (not the kind of thing for 9 to 5 office wear) and gives it a lived in, casual feel that makes it just perfect for hitting the beach with.
In fact, this is just what Savannah does while relaxing on her Spring Break holiday and it’s thanks to the bag that she meets Special Forces Army Officer John Tyree (the John of the title played by Step Up star Channing Tatum). While hanging with friends on the end of the beach’s pier, the bag gets knocked into the waves below and without missing a heartbeat the nearby John launches himself into the water to retrieve the bag, cue the first fateful meeting. After all, what are accessories for if not matchmaking romance?
The boho chic bag remains pretty hard to miss throughout the course of the drama as it hangs so fashionably from Savannah’s shoulder during key scenes including a passionate airport reunion. Proving that when you find the perfect bag, it will accessorise and complement any outfit. So if you’re looking to blow the dust off your spring look, introduce a little floral flirtiness with these bags.
