We all know how easy it is to hide under huge hoodies and swamping sweaters all winter long, almost forgetting your figure in a bid to ward off the chilly weather. Yet, what’s that we spy on the horizon? Could it be spring? Indeed there are promising signs that we’re past the worst of the cold winter – the odd burst of bright sunshine, sprouting shoots and spring showers – all adding up to a feeling of optimism that warmer weather is just around the corner and with that comes the promise of new seasonal styles.
And nothing is more spring-like and perky than the latest passion for pastels. Whether baby blues, girlie greens, pale pinks or soft yellows, this palette is so pretty, giving a soft touch of femininity to any outfit. Also known as sorbet shades, they’re seriously sweet and have us hungry for more. They’ve dominated the fashion catwalks, Luella gave us pink candyfloss dresses, Valentino luscious lemon ruffles, Tommy Hilfiger soft spearmint jumpsuits, Michael Kors lilac draping and much more besides. While the most on-trend of celebs have also been adding some blushing beauty to their looks with Kate Bosworth, Nicole Richie and Rachel McAdams all standing out in sorbets.
After all, it’s such an easy trend to work into your wardrobe. Pastel shades are so flattering that it doesn’t matter what your skin tone or hair colour, there are colours to suit you and there’s no need to worry about colours clashing as they all work so gorgeously together. They’re also incredibly versatile, wear them floaty and flirty in frilled chiffon and lace dresses for the full-on feminine effect or keep them more knockabout and everyday in sweetie-coloured denims. Or if you want to make an impact, but don’t fancy overhauling your whole closet, we’ve got just the thing – pastel Wayfarers.
Wayfarers are the classic sunglasses design by eyewear giant, Ray-Bans and have been at the top of the fashion pile since they were introduced back in 1952. Sure, there have been ups and downs as new generations pioneered their own styles, but the Wayfarer has weathered every style storm and every few years it bubbles to the surface again reminding everyone who does it best. Tom Cruise worked the look in just a shirt, pants and socks in Risky Business, the Blues Brothers gave theirs a funky twist and recently, Robert Pattinson donned a pair as vampire heart-throb Edward Cullen in Twilight.
These examples went for the traditional black frame, yet for female fashionistas the Wayfarer offers so much more. Quirky trend-setter Chloë Sevigny, runway model Emina Cunmulaj and fashion leader Kate Moss have all worn white Wayfarers as has Drew Barrymore who’s also been snapped in a vivid red pair. And now the pastel revolution has taken on the classic Wayfarer with stunning results as seen in 90210.
Like fellow American teen sagas Gossip Girl and Glee, 90210 has become a real force in small screen fashions and with the California sunshine it’s packed with inspirational summer looks. The Wayfarers are busted out by three of West Beverly’s finest while celebrating their summer vacations, namely bitchy ring-leader Naomi Clark (AnnaLynne McCord), outspoken free spirit Erin Silver (Jessica Stroup) and aspiring actress Adrianna Tate-Duncan (Jessica Lowndes), who all throw on a pair as they munch on ice creams (sorbet on both the menu and the fashion agenda!) and kick back and relax in the sunshine.
Naomi opts for spearmint (neatly matching her handbag and Lola wedge patent sandals), while both Silver and Adrianna are in the pink, the former a pale, powder shade, the latter a more vibrant colour. As is the way with pastels, they all look great on the soon-to-be juniors and the togetherness of the trio is echoed in them all wearing the same sunnies.
So whether you’re flying solo or fancy hooking up with your girlfriends, why not try this season’s hottest fashion trend with some sorbet sunglasses? A great way to experiment with pastels when the sun is shining.
Which is the more fashionable – 90210 or Gossip Girl?
