Well, here’s something we never thought we’d be saying – clogs are back. Yep, those clunky wooden shoes that make us think of Dutch milkmaids with blonde braids were all over the catwalks last year. The high heeled, backless versions were spotted at Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel show, and also featured on Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang’s spring/summer 2010 runways. And, as if they needed any more style ambassadors, fashionista turned designer Alexa Chung was spotted wearing a pair of brown Chanel clogs at their Couture 2010 show in Paris.
But if you’re worried about wearing such a strange shoe there is a solution. It’s not just the traditional clog with a huge heel and platform that’s all the craze, but mules and chunky wooden heeled sandals that are key for S/S 2010. And we’ve spotted a pair on the set of the eagerly awaited sequel, Sex and the City 2. But who’s sporting these quirky clogs I hear you ask? Well, it could be no other than Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) whose strange but stylish look is emulated by women the world over.
It’s no wonder we’re already looking to the second film for our summer wardrobes, considering how popular the fashions from the first film were. We had the typical Carrie quirky items like her Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower bag, and then her gorgeous wedding outfit; a Vivienne Westwood gown with Dior gladiator sandals. And we’ve already started looking forward to all the fashions we can expect from Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon).
Although we don’t know much about the second movie yet, due for release in May, we’ve seen a few pictures that have got our imaginations going. First the girls were spotted in 80’s gear, which stylist Patricia Field explains: “It was in the beginning of the movie. Carrie was waiting to meet her girlfriends and she was thinking about when she first moved to New York in the ‘80s and how she met Samantha and Charlotte. They’re all, in real time, meeting to go shopping. And in her flashback time, she is thinking of when she first met each one of them.” Then Samantha was seen parading around in a wedding dress, which is still a mystery, and we also saw them jetting off to Morocco to film some scenes! Excited yet? Well since there are still a few months to go, we’ll focus on what we do know; Carrie was scene in a nude pair of Swedish Hasbeens.
So with the Carrie seal of approval, we’ve been on the hunt for some catwalk clogs. We’ve found the same natural shade of Swedish Hasbeens, if a little different in shape. When 300 pairs of high heeled clogs from the 70’s were found a few years ago, Swedish Hasbeens was born and they’ve been making the unusual footwear by hand ever since. Every pair is individual, with the heels made of wood and the upper made of natural grain leather.
If you’re looking to go all out (but can’t afford the Chanel ones) we’ve found some great high heeled clogs, perfect with skinny jeans or wool tights (like Alexa) for the chilly weather. And if you’re looking for something a bit more wearable we’ve found some simple sandals with a chunky wooden heel – perfect worn with the summer florals we’re seeing everywhere.
Can clogs really make a fashion comeback?
