It’s your four year anniversary, your friends have informed you that they saw your man leaving a jewellery shop with a little red bag and you’ve practiced your surprised face. Dinner comes and goes and he finally slides that little box across the table towards you. You slowly open it, getting ready to give your answer when you see…earrings. So, what do you do? Break up with the guy? Pretend that everything’s okay? Or follow him to Ireland to propose on the one day of the year women are traditionally allowed? Well Anna Brady, played by Amy Adams (Enchanted and Julie & Julia), does just that in romantic comedy Leap Year.
After Anna’s dad (John Lithgow) convinces her to take the opportunity to propose, everything seems to be going to plan as she boards a plane to Ireland. But after some (typically) bad British weather she ends up on the wrong side of the country. She manages to enlist the help of local innkeeper Declan (Matthew Goode), who agrees to drive her to Dublin. But the journey is not an easy one and along the way love blossoms between the unlikely couple. But who will pop the question?
Anna, a Boston apartment stager, likes order and being in control and producer Jake Weiner thinks this comes across in her clothes, saying: “What she does for a profession is what she’s doing in her life. She’s staging everything so that each detail looks perfect as well.” Her outfits do reflect her polished and sophisticated look as costume deisnger Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh explains: “Her clothes are very tailored and high waisted and chic. When she arrives, she looks like something from another world.”
It’s one of these sophisticated spring looks that we’re concentrating on today as we’re glimpsing the first signs of the season. When Anna arrives in Declan’s Inn she’s wearing a sleeveless floral blouse (right on trend for S/S10), a high waisted grey skirt and a coral red long sleeved cardigan – all from British designer Paul Smith. Mhaoldomhnaigh says: “Colour, texture and pattern are important. There’s so much green, you have to be aware of what’ll work against the physical settings. She wears lovely soft colours, but we’ve also put in hints of red and blues and bits of pattern.” Although this is a simple modern look, the styling harks back to 1950’s chic, an elegant “mixture of Maureen O’Hara and Rita Hayworth.”
Not prepared for the terrible Irish weather, Anna only has her Burberry trench coat and tan leather Christian Louboutin sandals to protect her. Luckily Declan comes to her rescue, and we’ve come to yours with these fantastic lookalikes. Whether planning a trip to the Emerald Isle or simply looking for an update for your wardrobe, we love Anna’s simple yet stylish look.
Is Amy Adams better suited to indie films like Junebug and Sunshine Cleaning?
