The sun’s shining, the birds are singing and the leaves are back on the trees. Yet as soon as you step outside you realise that you’ve been fooled into thinking it’s a lot warmer than it actually is. And that’s where the denim jacket comes in; it’s the perfect transitional item for the chilly spring weather. However it’s not the boring blue denim type we’re talking about, but one we spotted on Emilie de Ravin’s (Lost, The Hills Have Eyes) Ally in new romantic drama Remember Me.
Remember Me follows Ally (de Ravin) and Tyler (Twilight’s Robert Pattinson), two young New Yorkers who’ve had to deal with some pretty bad things in their lives. Ally witnessed her mother murdered when she was just 11 and has since decided to live life to its fullest; however Tyler is dealing with his brother’s suicide in the complete opposite way. Rebellious and reckless, his tense relationship with his hardworking father (Pierce Brosnan) only spurs him on to behave badly. Until he’s arrested one night for breaking up a fight, and the police officer just so happens to be Ally’s father (Chris Cooper).
As the pair find happiness and comfort in each other, we’re constantly feeling a sense of foreboding, as if they can’t possibly be happy. And the twist at the end of the movie, which we won’t reveal to any fans that haven’t seen it yet, is certainly a shock. But it only reinforces the message that life should be lived to its fullest.
The touching romance between the pair seems to be down to their off-screen chemistry, which Emilie recognised from the start: “They’d been looking to cast my role for a while, looking at a lot of different girls. I read the script three weeks before they started shooting. I flew to New York to test with Rob and we immediately got along and had instant great chemistry, which is not an easy thing to come by. Obviously you’re acting, but you want to have that connection with somebody. We had it. And I was thrown into a wardrobe fitting that same day.”
And the wardrobe is what’s interesting us; created by Susan Lyall (Rachel Getting Married and Motherhood), Ally’s style is laid back and comfortable. She favours denim (skirts, shorts and jackets) for a simple but cool New York look. Being set in the summer of 2001 meant that the clothes didn’t need to be heavy or warm, with both Ally and Tyler sporting simple plaid shirts and tees.
But it’s her cute bleached denim jacket that’s caught our eye and we’ve found a selection of lookalikes for you to choose from. Perfect worn over a sweet summer floral dress, vintage style T-shirt and with jeans (double denim is so cool right now) this denim jacket is pretty versatile. Ally’s bleached, cropped version works perfectly with her laid back attitude, so why not grab one for yourself? And remember to turn up the cuff’s for a simple-summery touch.
Is Emilie de Ravin a better match for Robert Pattinson than Kristen Stewart?
