For years superhero films have been full of men; Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, Hulk, Wolverine, etcetera, etcetera. And while we appreciate these strong men coming to the rescue of the various damsels in distress, we want some superheroes we can relate to. Over the last few years it’s begun to change, with superheroines actually taking the front seat instead of hanging back as eye candy. There are the girls of X-Men, Silk Spectre (I and II) from Watchmen and even the cheerleader from Heroes.
But now there’s a new type of female super hero on the scene. She doesn’t have super powers, there’s no geek passing her unbelievable gadgets and she certainly doesn’t have age and experience on her side. That’s because Hit Girl, aka Mindy Macready (played by Chloe Moretz), is twelve years old and she’s kicking butt!
But the role has sparked a debate about the use of a child in the role, which includes masses of violence and swearing. Indeed one memorable scene see’s Mindy use a samurai swaord (very effectively in our opinion) on a drug dealer before announcing: “OK you c***s, let’s see what you can do!” Even Chloe seems to understand that: “It’s a movie you know, its not real life” she says. “If I ever uttered one word that I said in Kick-Ass, I would be grounded for years! I’d be stuck in my room until I was 20! I would never in a million years say that. I’m an average, everyday girl.”
And director Matthew Vaughn isn’t worried about the critics, he was only worried about getting the film right. “My job was to make a movie that was true to the comic book,” says the Stardust director. Based on the comic of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr, Kick-Ass follows as Dave Lizewski (Nowhere Boy’s Aaron Johnson) who decides being a superhero can’t be that hard and invents his alter ego Kick-Ass.
A stint in hospital (it’s not as easy as he thought) doesn’t teach him a lesson, and he continues with his mission. After a video is posted online, more vigilante heroes come out of the woodwork, including Hit Girl and Big Daddy (Chloe’s father played by Nicolas Cage) and Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Although comic-book adaptation movies are all the rage at the moment, it wasn’t easy for Kick-Ass to find a production company, eventually being picked up by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment.
Johnson says: “This for me this is Superbad versus Kill Bill. It’s supposed to be dark comedy, it’s mad, but it’s a comic book man, it’s a comic book!” We totally agree, but it also reminds us of other not-so-super hero movies like Hancock or the brilliant Mystery Men. With a soundtrack from Mika produced by RedOne, this movie looks set to be a hit with guys and girls alike.
If you don’t fancy slipping into the lycra and purple wig this weekend, why not pick up one of the cool Kick-Ass t-shirts from French Connection. There’s a cute white Hit Girl tee, or some nice tunic style tops that would look great with leggings. Take your pick from these slogans; ‘Girls Kick Ass’, ‘Good Call Baby Doll’ or our favourite ‘With No Power Comes No Responsibility’!
