When Jules (Courtney Cox) finds herself 40 years old, divorced and lonely she decides that something’s got to change, and it can only be the latter. So she enters the scary world of dating, which she finds dominated by hot young women who’re dating all the men her own age. It seems her only option is to go for a younger man (poor her!), and aided by her assistant Laurie (Dawson’s Creek’s Busy Philipps) and best friend (and neighbour) Ellie (Christa Miller from Scrubs) she goes on the prowl.
Christa thinks we see a different side to Courtney to the one we’re all used to, saying: “Her character on Friends was so incredibly popular and you see her and think that’s the person, when she’s not really at all like that. She’s goofy and silly in real life, I mean she definitely has a goofy sense of humour and is clumsy and goofy. I think Bill (Lawrence, Cougar Town creator) is writing for her more what she’s really like in real life.” And the show is full of comedy; whether it’s Jules embarrassing her teenage son, her boss making cougar-ish jokes or pretty much everything Laurie says and does.
And while it’s funny to see Jules battle to find a decent man, we can’t help but feel Courtney is miscast. We don’t feel sorry for her because we’d love to look like her when we’re 40 (or 45 as that’s how old Courtney is), and we find it hard to believe she can’t get a man – no matter what his or her age. But enough jealousy, what we’re really here for is the stuff we’ve seen in the show and in episode 14, ‘All the Wrong Reasons’, we spotted a particularly nice handbag in the opening scene.
At first we thought it belonged to the ever fashionable Jules, but it turns out Ellie left it at her house and Jules had been dipping into it for various things – money, lipstick, gum. The ‘Dylan’ bag is a mid-brown leather tote with zip pockets on the front and comes from Linea Pelle. We love it because it’s smart but slouchy, and pretty much goes with everything. And if any of your friends deicide to steal from you to ‘support a drinking habit’ they’ll notice the gorgeous animal print lining!
Is Jules a believable character?
