Happy Easter weekend! Throw on your slouchy pants and forget about the diet as it’s time to give in to those naughty cravings with some choccie eggs and hot cross buns. Ever since Christmas passed, stores have been packed with mountains of cocoa treats in preparation for this weekend, so scoff away! Of course, there’s more to the celebration of this Christian holiday than just how many mini eggs you can fit in your mouth at one time (go on – challenge yourself!), yet the celebration of Easter is kinda thin on the ground in movies. So instead we’re saluting a current film character with a seasonal spring vibe – the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.
Bunnies have been a long-time companion of Easter, the tradition being that the Easter Bunny delivers brightly coloured eggs to children in an Easter basket. There are numerous variations on the origins of the connection, from Pagans to the moon, but whatever the cause of the link, Easter bunnies have become one of the most familiar, potent and often scrummy images of this holiday season. And what-do-you-know, there just happens to be a very recognisable rabbit hopping about cinemas at the moment in Tim Burton’s 3D vision of the Lewis Carroll children’s classic.
Voiced by Brit actor, Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), the White Rabbit is actually addressed by his proper name in this version and so it’s Nivens McTwisp if you don’t mind. As per all past tellings of the story, it’s following him down the rabbit hole which starts Alice’s journey and Sheen felt that he shouldn’t stray too far from the original story. “The White Rabbit is such an iconic character that I didn’t feel like I should break the mold too much,” he admits.
Not that it’s all a re-tread of past White Rabbits, Nivens being a bit more complex than that. “He’s a warm character,” says the BAFTA award-winner, “but, at the same time, he can be quite fussy and quite strict with Alice as well. He has an edge to him, a nervous energy, always feeling like he’s behind time, time is very important to him. But he’s quite brave when called upon.”
And so to celebrate Easter weekend, we’re going bonkers for the bunny with some stylish White Rabbit graphic tees, jewellery and more. Now where’s that choccie egg?
