As we step closer to summer we start changing our wardrobes; swapping coats for jackets, wool tights for footless one’s and experimenting with colour. While the bright reds and navy blue of nautical is nice, and the peachy tones of the girly floral trends are pretty, we want something in the middle. Cue yellow; the ultimate spring colour. It was seen all over the catwalk from designers like Bottega Veneta, Ferragamo, Zac Posen, Louis Vuitton, Stella McCartney and Lacoste. Even the Pantone fashion colour report for spring 2010 says “Yellow has made its mark on fashion and spring will further this trend with gleaming Aurora. Reminiscent of the first glimpse of yellow as the sun begins to rise over the horizon, this shimmering, slightly greenish yellow adds a bold infusion.”
But yellow can be a tough colour to wear, and the best way to do it is with a summery dress – perfect for warming up thos chilly spring mornings before the suns gotten to them. We’ve picked out our favourite yellow dresses from the world of television and film, and we’re kicking off with a whole group. We can’t get the Glee mash-up of Walking on Sunshine and Halo out of our heads, and it’s no surprise since the girls song-and-dance routine was so damn good. But so were their outfits; all six of the girls took to the stage in beautiful yellow dresses.
Costume designer Lou Eyrich wanted the dresses to be ‘sweet, youthful, and happy’ as well as comntrasting the boys, who were singing a song about dark times. And with a song about sunshine and halo’s what better colour to choose than yellow. She says: “We could’ve just made them and had them all the same, but we liked that they each had their own character in their dress” and we couldn’t agree more. Rachel’s (Lea Michelle) young but prim dress comes from Shoshanna, while Quinn’s (Dianna Agron) more modern crochet one is Calvin Klein. Tina’s (Jenna Ushkowitz) was a white Betsey Johnson dress Lou dyed, Brittany’s (Heather Morris) was Kimichi Blue, Santana (Naya Rivera) wears a BCBG Max Azria and Mercedes (Amber Riley) had hers custom made. And even Emma (Jayma Mays) joined in, wearing yet another cute pussy bow blouse in yellow.
Sticking with television, we happened to notice a rather nice yellow number on Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) in Ghost Whisperer. We love her cute J. Crew yellow bow coat (also spotted on America Ferrera in Ugly Betty) but we’re done with coats for now, so it’s the Jovovich-Hawk dress we’ve got our eyes on. The beautiful yellow chiffon is highlighted by cream silk straps that go under the bust and cross over at the front, an interesting and fun touch.
Still in the realm of TV, our new favourite True Blood vamp Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) also wears a lot of yellow, particularly a floral summer dress we absolutely love. The shows stylist Audrey Fisher says that the secret behind the southern girls’ wardrobes is Walmart, as designer pieces would look out of place in the small town of Bon Temps. Jessica’s stolen Hoyt’s heart, and now her dress has stolen ours. We’ve also seen the summery tone on other TV divas such as the gorgeous Betty Draper (January Jones) from Mad Men, and in Desperate Housewives Edie (Nicolette Sheriden) was wearing the stunning “Marliyn” dress by Catherine Malandrino.
As if we needed more convincing we’ve also noticed queen of style Cameron Diaz on the set of her latest film Knight and Day, in which she co-stars with Tom Cruise, wearing a beautiful yellow sundress. It may be a simple cotton number, but it’s fun and flirty, and has a 50’s shape that flatters almost any figure. She’s also been spotted in a yellow number (teamed with biker boots!) on the set of Bad Teacher, along with a bright red sports car and cigarette. We’ve scoured the net and found you lookalikes for these dresses, so you’ll be able to bring a touch of sun to your wardrobe, even if it’s not outside.
Can you wear yellow well in winter?
