She’s a top TV star, a bestselling singer and has even released clothing lines, but still there are some people out there that think Miley Cyrus sounds more like a country cottage than a worldwide teenage phenomenon. But the 17-year-old looks set to reach those adults yet to discover her thanks to her new movie, The Last Song.
Written by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook) especially for the Disney starlet with the goal of introducing her to an older audience, the movie sees her flex her acting chops as Ronnie, a rebellious young girl estranged from her father that is until they spend one summer together reconnecting at his southern beach house. Add to that a romance with beach volleyball player, Will Blakelee (Miley’s real-life fella, Aussie hunk Liam Hemsworth), some Miley tunes and an under threat nest of Loggerhead Sea Turtles (that ol’ chestnut, what love story would be complete without one?) and Miley’s looking good to make that next step. So good in fact, that we fancy stealing her style.
As she moves away from her teenage stroppiness, Ronnie’s look starts to mature. Gone are the hard edges, the urban punkiness and in comes something more chilled out and relaxed. Producer Jennifer Gigbot explains: “Julie Anne [Robinson, the director] and I definitely wanted the costumes to reflect the progression of Ronnie’s character."
“What we see on the outside says a lot about how she has changed on the inside," she adds. "Louise Frogley, our costume designer, definitely got that. Through the course of the movie, Ronnie loses some of the edge to her. As she falls in love with Will and begins to forgive her father, her clothes become softer and more feminine.”
But not wet and sappy – that’s the key to keeping Ronnie cool throughout this shift; while the change in location (bustling New York City to a sleepy coastal town in Georgia) also plays its part, allowing Miley to lounge about in more summery stuff. These beach fashions are bang on-trend as we head into the sunshine months and happily very accessible, so we can all crib some style notes from Ronnie.
We especially love Ronnie’s low-key vest and jeans combo. On the one hand it sounds really plain and uninspiring, yet look closer and there are some really cute details that give the outfit an edge. The loose tunic vest has chest and bottom frills, the distressed blue jeans are rolled-up (stylish and practical if dodging waves) and underneath there’s a cropped vest giving layers and more colour. The look is finished with Ronnie’s signature accessories and jewellery, leather beaded bracelet and dangly coin necklace among them, all adding up to a casual, fun look to kick-back in this summer.
