Films and television have always had an inspiration on fashion, but Alice in Wonderland took it to another level, with jewellery, clothes, make-up and shoes inspired by Tim Burton’s 3D sequel popping up all over the place. While the latest 3D blockbuster Clash of the Titans might not seem like the most fashion forward film (maybe some toga-style dresses) we’ve been inspired to dig out some gorgeous gladiator sandals.
As spring approaches we’re starting to see a lot of interesting footwear appearing on the shelves (or websites); it seems this year we’ll be wearing everything from clogs to towering platforms. However, we all know how great it is to be able to paint your toenails and slip into a pair of sandals. This summer the style is strappy – from ankle cuffs to knee high buckles, gladiator sandals have been given a makeover.
Clash of the Titans is a modern take on the traditional Greek myth of Perseus, played by Avatar’s Sam Worthington who calls the movie a “fun, boisterous popcorn movie.” And he knows the films no Oscar-winner: “We’re under no illusions, it’s not a history lesson. It’s a guy on a winged horse in a skirt with rubber swords battling monsters, and I think 3D can kind of help you. It can bring you in there. You should come out, throw your glasses off and realise that this is a hoot – it’s a rollercoaster.” At least he’s not expecting much!
While the guys watch in awe and Perseus and his crew defeat giant scorpions, the snake haired Medusa and the terrifying Kraken, we girls get to admire Sam and stare jealously at Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) who plays Io and Alexa Davalos (Defiance) as Andromeda. Be inspired by these Greek goddesses and grab a pair of high-leg sandals today. But remember to keep it simple; shoes like this need a simple outfit to pull them off.
Are these sandals taking the gladiator look a step too far?
