Last year brought the sad passing of Patrick Swayze, the much-missed swivel-hipped hunk who made pottery steamy in Ghost and even pulled off a blonde shag hair-don’t in Point Break. And while he had an enviable and eclectic CV packed with big and small-screen hits, roughing it with the guys in Road House, camping it up in drag in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and getting historical in Civil War miniseries North and South, it was as sexy dance instructor, Johnny Castle in 1987 girlie classic, Dirty Dancing that we’ll best remember him.
For 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey), on holiday with her rich family at the Kellerman’s resort in the Catskill Mountains, Johnny is every dream come true. He’s that bit older, that bit more experienced, oh and he sure can dance. On the surface he seems like a bad boy, Baby’s overprotective dad, Jake wrongfully believing that he got his dance partner, Penny knocked up, not to mention a similarly unfounded allegation of stealing a guest’s wallet, but Johnny’s a good guy and, like us, Baby just can’t resist.
It’s that familiar against the odds romance – there’s the age gap, the class clash and her dad doesn’t approve – which, along with the catchy Oscar-winning songs, amazing dance routines (c’mon – we’ve all wished we could do the lift) and endlessly quotable lines (“Nobody puts baby in a corner,” was named the cheesiest movie line ever last year) has helped make it the stuff of legend.
It’s been called “the Star Wars for girls” and was recently voted the most-watched women’s movie ever beating the likes of Pretty Woman, Grease and The Sound of Music proving that now, 23 years after Baby and Johnny first dirty danced into cinemas, we’re still having the time of our lives. And with the 80s back on top of the fashion agenda, dance taking over the tube with Dancing with the Stars and movies such as the upcoming Step Up 3-D and StreetDance 3D to look forward to, it’s time to hit the dance floor Swayze style!
Is Dirty Dancing as cool now as it was in its 80s heyday?
