Did you grow up giggling to the goofy charms of classic 80s sitcom, Who’s The Boss? Or wish you could make magic like the family of witches in Charmed? Well, if so you’re familiar with the infectious small screen charms of Alyssa Milano. The Brooklyn-born actress practically grew up in front of a television audience first as Samantha Micelli in the Tony Danza comedy and then as premonition-powered Phoebe Halliwell in the supernatural drama. And now after heading up two TV pilots that weren’t picked up (2007’s Reinventing the Wheelers and 2008’s Single with Parents) she’s now hoping that it’s third time lucky with Romantically Challenged.
Romantically Challenged is the first spring pilot out of the blocks for ABC and as well as the star wattage of Alyssa it boasts other promising credentials, its writer has the likes of Family Guy and Politically Incorrect on his CV and the director helmed Will & Grace – not too shabby. Debuting tonight at 9.30pm after Dancing With the Stars, it’s a classic combination of chums, chuckles and chic styles.
Taking centre stage is Alyssa who plays the recently divorced lawyer and single mom, Rebecca Thomas. She’s been out of the dating scene for a while (since Clinton was in office she jokes) and with the help and support of her equally hopeless in love friends she’s trying to get back in the game. Making up her support network is longtime best friend, Perry Gill (Kyle Bornheimer, Worst Week’s Sam Briggs) a macho guy who falls hopelessly in love every five minutes, Perry’s sponging and ever-cynical room-mate Shawn (Aussie Josh Lawson) and Rebecca’s younger sister, Lisa (Kelly Stables, most familiar as Alan’s receptionist, Melissa in Two and a Half Men).
“It’s about four best friends who are totally functional with each other and then everything outside of their core group is dysfunctional,” explains Alyssa. “And they all have their own little romantic challenges that we learn about along the way.” Sounds intriguing, almost like a 2010 mash-up of Will & Grace and Friends (they hang out in a coffee house, hello Central Perk!)
Diving back into the weird world of dating, Rebecca makes sure she looks every inch the bombshell to attract the guys and we love the sexy red dress she wears on her night out with prospective boyfriend, Leo. The vivid all-over colour really makes it pop, the saucy scarlet a spot-on choice for Alyssa’s fair colouring and reflecting some of Rebecca’s passion. And while it’s just the one shade, its given personality through the details – the asymmetric straps make it unusual and eye-catching, the slim line pencil shape lends it a sleek, flattering silhouette and the black belted waist breaks up the bulk of red adding a cute, fun touch.
Rebecca understands that the dress is the star of the ensemble and so teams it with subtle silver jewellery and some fantastic suede sandals totalling one sizzling style that is bound to turn heads. We’ve found the exact dress itself, the Black Halo Jackie O, and have rustled up some similar lookalikes all guaranteed to turn you into one red hot mama, just like Rebecca!
