While the majority of products associated with last year’s sci-fi blockbuster Avatar are undoubtedly aimed at men (videogames, t-shirts, action figures) there are a few cool things that caught our eye. And one of these happened to be on the big screen itself. No, it’s not Sam Worthington, but feisty pilot Trudy Chacon’s (Michelle Rodriguez) Mosley Tribe sunglasses.
Trudy was a tough but friendly pilot who was assigned to protect the RDA scientists, including Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), from the more hostile of Pandora’s elements. She loved her Samson-16 chopper (calling it her baby) and when it came to fighting and killing the Na’vi she showed us her true colours and turned around, saying ‘I didn’t sign up for this sh*t’. And we breathed a sigh of relief because we were right about her good nature all along. Sadly Trudy was killed by her bitter superior Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) during the battle over the Tree of Souls.
Michelle Rodriguez fit the role of Trudy perfectly, having gained a tough-girl image from her previous roles and personal life. She started out at an open audition for an independent film, and beat over 350 other girls for the lead in Girlfight. As soon as director James Cameron saw her in the movie, he knew he wanted her to be in one of his – and now his wish has come true. After Girlfight Michelle went on to star in The Fast and The Furious franchise, Lost and Resident Evil, and she’ll be showing up in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete later this year!
If you want to emulate Trudy’s tough girl image, reach for your Mosley Tribe Raynes aviator sunglasses and step into the sun. While Pandora might not be your holiday destination (and you probably won’t be piloting the plane either) you’ll still need some sunnies, so grab a similar pair with gold frames and dark lenses. Hear Michelle talk about her character and see the sunglasses in action below.
Do you think Trudy's romance with Norm should have been included in the film?
