We all know that Jennifer Lopez knows a thing or two about looking good. It doesn’t matter if she’s strutting her stuff on stage as a pop diva or up on the big screen as a Hollywood leading lady – she never fails to deliver. And so we’re treated to another dose of her flawless fashion sense in new rom-com, The Back-Up Plan. J.Lo stars as Zoe, a woman so fed up with waiting for Mr Right that she opts for artificially insemination to battle her baby blues – only to then find the perfect guy, Stan (Alex O’Loughlin). Only problem is she now comes with a plus one, is he ready to become a daddy so early in their relationship?
Pah, who cares? Check out the clothes! Zoe is a chic and elegant dresser, moving effortlessly from professional office outfits to more weekend friendly leisure gear, casual daywear to dressed-up evening wear and it’s for one particular special occasion that she really dials up the glamour. Zoe dresses for a romantic date with Stan in a gorgeous beaded tank dress by Day Birger et Mikkelsen. This being a rom-com, things don’t go as planned on the night (the dress coming second in a battle with a bottle of red wine!), but before its accident, the silk tunic is a real winner.
The Danish fashion house Day Birger et Mikkelsen isn’t as familiar or famous as other designer brands, but since its founding in 1997 has been building a strong reputation for quality design most recognisable for its embroidery and embellishments with an ethnic flavour. It’s this Asian spice combined with Scandinavian function that has really helped it stand out and now Hollywood is taking notice with Day Birger et Mikkelsen scoring high profile spots in films such as The Back-Up Plan and Leap Year (Amy Adams wore their pale green blouse in the charming rom-com).
It sure helps that this particular piece works a number of this summer’s hottest trends. The colour, a subtle and sophisticated nude, is part of a wider craze that has been sweeping the catwalks. Be it a perky pink or a more muted beige, neutral fleshy shades that almost make you seem naked are big business and great for showing off your summer tan as per Zoe!
The dress also boasts an embellished neck line with stunningly intricate beading that is reminiscent of the current tribal trend and all gorgeously packaged in a loose-fitting tunic dress that is flattering and flirty. Zoe wears hers with bold black platform sandals, simple jewellery and with her hair long and tousled, but the dress can be styled in all sorts of ways. Play it down during the day with some leggings and ballerina pumps and then dress up for a night out with heels and bare legs as seen on Zoe.
One dress – so many options. It’s a perfect summer wardrobe staple.
