Some people have it all; designer clothes, swanky car, gorgeous house filled with lovely furniture and, to top it all off, the perfect family. The Joneses fit the bill perfectly, and when they move into a new area they leave their neighbours and classmates drooling over pretty much everything they own. If it’s not Kate’s (Demi Moore) designer dress then it’s her food (Chef Robear’s) or her husband’s, Steve (David Duchovny), golf clubs.
What if they weren’t the perfect family, but a new form of stealth marketing? Well that’s the premise behind new dark comedy The Joneses, in which the ‘family’ (or unit as Kate likes to refer to them) have sales targets to meet. While daughter Jenn (Amber Heard) pouts her lips and sells 10 lipsticks, son Mick (Ben Hollingsworth) shows off the latest gadgets and fastest cars. How can the other kids possibly compete? And that’s exactly what KC (Lauren Hutton), head of the marketing company, wants them to do.
However there is one character that seems to be resistant to the charms of The Joneses. Naomi (Christine Evangelista) has a bit of a soft spot for Mick, but of course he isn’t really Mick but a clever salesman. Just because Naomi isn’t drawn in by the glitz and glamour of the Joneses doesn’t mean she doesn’t have taste. She was spotted wearing some gorgeous handmade jewellery from eco-designer Kerin Rose.
Talking about creating ‘green’ jewellery, Kerin says: “My studio purchases carbon offsets for the small amounts of electricity used, have swapped out traditional toxic acids for natural citric acid and vinegar. We use only recycled sterling silver and gold, and recently have moved away from using much in the way of stones at all, due to my feelings about mining in general. I use beeswax for carving, as a way to bring more attention to issues of disappearing bee colonies…using everything I do as a platform to help create awareness, using my art as way to spread the message”.
Do your bit and pick up some recycled jewellery now, like the Adinkra shield bracelet seen in the movie.
