This week sees Gwyneth Paltrow return as Pepper Potts in Iron Man 2, so we decided to take a look back at her career. While she’s had some notable roles in films like Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr Ripley and Shallow Hal, it’s her part as Margot in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums that sticks with us. Heavy on the eyeliner and almost never without her fur coat, Margot was a silent but interesting character in a film about a very strange family.
Margot, along with her adopted siblings, was a talented child who was frequently writing and staging plays. However when her parents, Royal (Gene Hackman) and Etheline Tenenbaum (Anjelica Huston), split up she became introverted and started smoking, a habit she still hides from her family and husband Raleigh St. Clair (Bill Murray). She continues an affair with family friend Eli Cash (Owen Wilson), while hiding her feelings for her adopted brother Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson), who harbours the same feelings for her.
It seems adult life has not been easy for the Tenenbaum children, and this is reflected in their clothes. Nothing much has changed in both their lives or outfits since their father left and Margots costumes are especially similar. She spend almost the entire film in Lacoste style tennis dresses, and in a shot of her wardrobe you can see the rows of stripes on hangers. While her dresses might reflect her innocence and childhood, her Prada fur coat says wealthy woman. Teamed with loafers, a Hermes Birkin bag and a red plastic barrette she looks like a girl who’s been dressing up in her mother’s closet.
Not that this is a bad look, in fact we were so inspired that we searched the internet for polo-shirt-dresses. We couldn’t find many striped dresses, but we settled for the simple tennis style and shape. Add your own fur coat for the Margot look or wear with sneakers for a sporty summer look.
Is Margot Tenenbaum Gwyneth Paltrow's best film character?
