Musicals have come a long way since the days of Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Busby Berkeley’s regimented kaleidoscopic choreography style. The 1930’s to 50’s was considered the golden age of musical movies, but after this their popularity started to decline. While they had a resurgence in the 1960’s with successful films like West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, the by the 1970’s they were again out of favour with the public. That was until 1978 when Grease hit theatres and the public fell in love with Danny and Sandy. Today we have remakes and adaptations of traditional musicals, combined with modern takes on the genre like Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and The Happiness of the Katakuris.
While the inspiration for most modern musicals comes from the golden age, Grease has had a massive impact on popular culture and is often considered the best film of 1978. The original stage show is still one of the most popular musicals, with fans eager to dress up in the stylised costumes from the fifties set film. Most of all Grease captures the fun of being a teenager, whether your teenage years were in the 50’s, 70’s or present day. It’s the musical for people who never thought musicals could be cool.
Grease follows Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), who share a summer romance which continues as Sandy joins the students at Rydell High School. While Danny is a member of a gang of greasers called the T-Birds, Sandy joins a group of girls known as the Pink Ladies, led by the fantastic Rizzo (Stockard Channing). With sex, drugs and catchy songs, Grease captures the teenage years we all wish we’d had. Every guy wants to date Sandy or Rizzo, and every girl wants Danny or Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) to pay them some attention.
While we can’t travel back to a time when high school was about midnight movies and who was taking you to the dance, we can relive the movie with the retro Grease t-shirts. Whether you’re a fan of the ‘bad Sandy’ or you’re a Beauty School Drop Out, we’ve found a great tee for every Grease fan.
Which is better: Sandy's good girl clothes or her sexy black outfit?
